BOOM! Feed my ego.
What bothers me about this is feels like Kentucky is the kid that didn’t study and now just wants to cheat right off of the smart kid. “Hey, just give me both of Illinois’ recruiters”.

On top of that we are doing it in a manner that’s dragging on during the recruiting season.
Well, Illinois is about to do the same thing to some other school(s). S**t rolls downhill.

Losing one high profile assistant happens all the time, see MSU and Indiana.

But can anyone name me another instance of TWO assistants leaving one program for the same different program? No matter how you slice it, it makes us look bad (even amateurish) no matter how many leaks come out about how much we were willing to pay to have them stay.

There's nothing wrong with speculating, inferring, or assuming. It's when people claim it as "common sense" or "fact" that it's misleading.

People put words in players' mouths all the time and these things get regurgitated as factual. If it doesn't get called out, it keeps getting repeated. I'm from the Caribbean and so stuff like this strikes a chord especially.
It's not a fact. It is common sense.

Presuming these guys are having good experiences here, I don't see any transfers with OA. A bird in the hand adage plays, although people, especially young ones, often forget it.

Well, my own view is that it reflects pretty well on us and BU if the highest profile program in the country is trying to steal multiple assistants from us. It’s too bad we couldn’t keep them. But I hope the next assistants BU brings on are also in demand by blue bloods.

I hate to barge in on this riveting back and forth....but I am the main reason Curbelo came to Illinois.

This is speculation. You even say it yourself "reasonably speculate". Doesn't change the fact it's speculation.
I'm speculating that things might have gone differently in the alternate universe where OA is not here, not speculating that OA played a big reason in them coming here. We know this based on what players have said.

Edit: I disagree with those stating that b/c OA played a big reason in certain players coming here that that means they may also leave b/c he is leaving. I don't think those can reasonably be tied together and will readily admit that is all speculation.

On the flip side, though, Miller is leaving because he’s pissed that you’re better at Gifs than he is

I told Adam he would be a three n' D in the NBA. He slapped me and ran away.

I agree it “reflects pretty well” on Illini, but really what does that get us beyond some current and brief self satisfaction. Does it really bring us a better pool of assistants to choose from? Not really. If all or some of the money that was earmarked to keep the assistants goes toward new hires that is what will help. And doubt it helps with recruits. Not like we can pitch look how great staff was that blue blood wanted them. Recruit: oh, so they’re still here? Us: Umm no. I think it makes KY look a little bad, but that won’t matter to anyone other than us.

As to the whole OA and PR connection, you can assign whatever value you want to impact OA had, but it certainly had some kind of impact in getting Curbelo. Was it the “main reason”? I don’t know but it doesn’t seem a stretch to say it was enough of a factor to open the door wider and tip the scales towards the Illini. Once Curbelo was in place, I’d guess he had some impact on the others coming (but no I don’t know for sure). If Curbelo stays — and I think he will — I’d say Plummer stays. Melendez might be a little iffier, but I’d like to think the other PR players as well as all the other factors for Illinois help keep him here.

All that said, it sucks losing OA and possibly Chin. Hopefully will get two new great hires that can assess, recruit and develop players — and maybe start some new pipeline. And hopefully the current PR players can help that pipeline at least stay open a bit.

That two assistants could move on at the same time is indeed a blow. However, it also means two other things of interest: 1) They both did not want to be here. And, IMHO, I prefer Illinois guys - no exceptions. Sounds rabid. Yes. And 2) China developed here, at Illinois, which means others could be attracted.

However, next time around we need to build some better fences.

Meanwhile beat UK anywhere, all-the-time.

However, next time around we need to build some better fences.

One thing that would not be a good selling point to prospective top coaches is taking measures to prevent them from moving up in their careers.

WaltJabsco: “One would be hard pressed to name another person in college basketball who has the Caribbean experience, knowledge, and connections that Antigua has. He is, therefore, singularly skilled in recruiting that area of the world.”

Remember that old proverb: “When one Caribbean pipeline shuts down, another pipeline opens up.” Or maybe it was something about doors and windows. Whatever.

The Illini have been beneficiaries of some really special Caribbean talent lately. But great ball is being played all over the World. If “O” goes, it’s simply time to mine some of those riches from other parts of the Planet.

And some of the Blue Bloods have done well for a long time without getting much from that part of the Globe.

I’m assuming he’s being somewhat sarcastic with the fences comment - probably means something closer to making a nicer backyard with a heated pool within said fence. This would make them more likely to want to stay.

I don't understand how being powerless to prevent another program from raiding our staff makes us look good. It only reinforces a hierarchy in which programs like Kentucky (or Kansas) can steal our lunch on those rare occasions that our lunch looks good enough to steal. I know it's the reality of the situation, but I can't see how it reflects well on us.

If Kentucky poaches Antigua, fair enough. I think he's been working his way back up after his bed-pooping at South Florida.

If they also poach Chin...%#@& them!
