This seems like it would be a mistake. The kid knows his dads theories on coaching. If he wants to be a great head coach he needs exposure to a different style now. There’s a reason Tyler Self isn’t an assistant at Kansas. Imo.
Hopefully the Miles Smith experiment has soured the athletic department about putting the coach's kid into a valuable coaching position with zero experience. I'm all for it if he's interested in being a GA but not the assistant coach position.

I imagine it would have to be more than money for Mennenga to leave Oregon; the Ducks have Nike money.
Yeah that was my point — that even if he felt the local pull, Oregon can throw enough money at him to deaden that feeling. And with Stubblefield gone already they’re even more likely to open up the Nike vault. If he was still there, they might only have looked into Nike’s petty cash drawer to keep Mennenga.

Just because an organization can throw money at someone it doesn’t mean they will. Every employee has a perceived “value”, which is highly subjective. That’s why people change jobs. Sometimes people feel the organization doesn’t offer what they perceive to be their true worth. Sometimes that value isn’t even about money, but the trust to work on the best and coolest stuff or some other intangible thing(s). Just saying that you can’t lose for trying.

Some UK fans have heavily intimated that losing Podz to us was one of the catalysts for shaking up their coaching staff and specifically targeting Chin as a recruiter. It sounds like Chin really impressed the right people when he helped reel in Podz.
Damn, so salty. In a way, I feel sorry for them.

Alright that passed, they can eat a rock.

He could be but I don't think that's the answer. He's not walking in and making an impact on recruiting.
Will Bailey seems like a natural fit. IDK if he wants to switch jobs again so soon but it gets him back to the Midwest.
Tyler as a GA wouldn't help for recruiting, but would give us someone who knows our system (& players) and doesn't count against the AC staff. Inexpensive way to "add a coach."

They're getting desperate. OA and Chin will have their work cut out for them. That roster is pretty far from being functional. If Carr isn't buying what UK is selling and/or some quality PGs don't look their way after pulling out of the draft, they could easily have a repeat of last year.

BOOM! Feed my ego.
People keep throwing out names for potential new ACs and the names seem to center round recruiters and alums. Obviously recruiting is huge, but what about the actual coaching/player development aspects? OA and Chin seemed to have checked the latter boxes as well as the former — and within two different groups, big men and guards. Using the most recent potential staff listed above — Frazier, Mennenga, Daniyal Robinson — is there expertise coaching big men as well as guards in that group? Again, recruiting is huge, but when putting together our wish list for new staff members we have to remember player development.
Good point. I'll start digging into the coaching acumen of 25 potential assistants.

For those in the know, how established is the pecking order on a typical staff? Like in football, obviously the OC is higher than the DL coach, etc. In basketball are the 3 assistants more or less on even footing? I guess what I'm getting at is, with Chin and OA leaving, can BU offer Gentry the OC-equivalent, basically make him the number 1 assistant? Or would it not really matter and it would all come down to money and comfort?
If they are chasing a guy like Mennega, Gentry surely won't be the #1 assistant.

I'd like to see at least two alums on staff. Chester and maybe Roger Powell or Brian Randle. James Augustine, who just concluded his pro career, wants to get into coaching. Maybe start him the Basketball Ops position assuming he can teach big-man footwork and post moves.

Oregon just hired a new assistant coach. Does that mean Mennenga is coming here:) (Mennenga is still listed as an assistant.) If Oregon wants keep Mennenga he will be expensive as Phil Knight will likely spend the money to keep him.

He could also just use the COVID year and come back for yet another year as a walk-on, right? It’d be an “inexpensive way to ‘add a coach,’” while still allowing us to year the GA position (if we have one open) to bring a different perspective.

As one who often defended CF as a player, and I admit I know little about his coaching or recruiting ability, I am fairly surprised at the love he is getting from the same board that lambasted him regularly as a player. I’ve no idea if he is ready for this level, but if Underwood thinks he is I have no problem with it. I know he is tough and a competitor.
