I would think that Underwood would have assurances from whom ever he is targeting that they are taking the job before he offers it. I doubt that Huss had a firm offer without him saying "I'm coming regardless of what Creighton offers". Again, not in the room, but so much of the behind the scenes activity is with the agent. Both parties can say that they didn't get to the point of an offer. Underwood can say that he wasn't turned down and Huss can say that he wasn't planning on leaving.
This is almost certainly the case. I'd be very surprised is Whitman has had an actual offer declined. But coaching basketball at the high DI level is a pretty small field, and people who work in the field know what it means when a chair has been empty for a while.

For what it’s worth, a colleague of mine who is a hardcore Virginia Tech. alum is pissed that Chester Frazier left. He says that Frazier is a great coach and recruiter.. future head coach in his opinion.

A lot of people think that. And his resume is pretty darn good.

I hope it ends up being true!

We need someone to break through as “was an assistant at UI with Underwood then became a HC”.

That in itself will check the final box for being able to attract the entire spectrum of assistants.

Any interest or gossip we can talk about for the next few days on Armstrong?
No, but I've incepted myself into half believing this plane that's been going between champaign, chicago, manassas, omaha, dupage, and naples has something to do with the assistant search, and there are stops in New Orleans from a couple weeks ago. So. Hey. That's basically a contract offer. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N863LB/history

What are the options now? Assuming Alexander slots into Gentry's role, we need a final assistant. Legitimate question: Has Brad and Josh considered and/or contacted Brian Randle? He is coaching in the NBA (Phoenix Suns). That is assuming he'd be open to coaching in college. Not just any college, his Alma Mater.
His wife is the daughter of two Illinois grads (one of them a former star pitcher for the baseball team) and the sister of a former Miss America that went to U of I. I am almost certain that she attended the U of I, also.

Are we just doing the alum thing or does he have actual, strong recruiting connections? He's only been a pro coach.

I say lets just go get Myers Leonard to be the last AC... He is free and maybe done in NBA. Loves the U of I. He knows what a center needs to do to be successful in the league and kids know him. Win win...../s

I think we have to accept that a lot of candidates are listening to our offers, not with the intention of accepting, but merely as leverage to improve their standing in the current positions. I trust Brad and Josh. But it might be time to start looking at up-and-coming mid-major assistant coaches who will see this as a promotion and would presumably jump at the opportunity to coach at the University of Illinois. Coleman came from UIC and he worked out ok. Jevon Mamon (SIU and Meanstreets ties) might be the next Coleman; might help with AJ Casey and Jalen Washington. Coleman was brought in presumably to improve our prospects with MIF and Ayo. Same play with Mamon vis-a-vis Meanstreets (Casey & Washington)?

He also worked as the player development coach for the Timberwolves and as a coach for Team USA. It is difficult to define a person's recruiting ability unless he has been coaching in college for a number of years. Assts. in the NBA are expected to recruit free agents and others. I was just giving some background info.

Are you Mamon’s agent? This is at least the third post you’ve been touting him. Not saying he’d be a terrible choice or a great one, just that we get you like Mamon. It does look like though that Chin Coleman had more experience when BU hired him than Mamon has now.

The outreach has actually been elite.
Well than what's the problem(not being sacastic at all) are we trying to get ones off BU list first and then go after the ones that actually called about openings, I'm actually asking for me not a friend

I actually don't think we have to accept that at all. We don't know how many conversations BU & Co. have had with prospective ACs. We don't know how many have been informally offered the job. We don't know all of the compounding factors (e.g. a kid who is in their last year of high school) involved in some of those allegedly turning down the offer. We have no hard information that would tell us that we are or are not getting played, so why do we have to accept that?
