When you hire to meet a deadline you're committing to making that hire again in the near future, I don't care if it's a hoops coach, a Java coder, a salesperson, or a janitor. There are folks on staff to deal with recruits, being short one is obviously not ideal, but I really doubt it will have a material impact on anyone other than the coaches on staff that have to pick up some extra slack.Brad is officially behind schedule on this one. Dead period that has been in effect since March 13, 2020 was lifted today. Need all hands on deck and we're missing an AC and assistant to the HC

Hold on there now fella, so you're saying no one else cares as much about Illinois basketball as us? Hogwash. There is only one program that matters and these staff openings have consumed the mainstream news cycle FOR WEEKS!Well, this doesn't fit the IL narrative that this is an unmitigated disaster, and the MCBB universe is actually a global effort to thwart Illini fans who cling to the edge of that universe by cracked fingernails.
Hiring an assistant is a little different than a real world hire. In the real world, there is a much larger pool and you might have to wait based on multiple variables. P5, D1 assistant coaches is a much smaller pool that you are pulling from and adding in everything that Brad wants in an assistant that pool becomes even smaller. When you hire to meet a deadline you're committing to making that hire again in the near future, I don't care if it's a hoops coach, a Java coder, a salesperson, or a janitor. Which is why you don't rush it. You make a bad hire or settle for #11 on your list and you're stuck with them.Hiring an assistant is a little different than a real world hire. If anybody has the coaching athleticism we need, it's the Hick from French Lick.I heard that Larry Bird is still in play. He hasn't said no.
THE SoB will take bigs and work on defense and toughness. Bird will take guards and work on jumpers and growing phenomenal mustaches. We need Bird to coach Curbelo.

I think this makes perfect sense, but I wonder how many high level NBA guys are looking to move to the college game? Jason Kidd is reported to make over $1.6M as an assistant so I think it‘s safe to assume we are talking about different tier. Certainly there are guys that would be getting a nice boost if we are still throwing around $800k, but how many of those are mind blowing guys? I kinda wish Underwood hadn’t made that comment because whoever he hires will be judged by that standard at least on this board. If you're a college assistant, you would have wanted to get a deal done before the dead period ended to not put your old school at a serious disadvantage and so you can hit the ground running in your new job. If you're us, especially considering how much time has gone by, we'd have found a way to get the deal done before the dead period ended if our top choice was a college assistant. Underwood has already stated that our minds would be blown if we knew the options he had. To me, an NBA assistant makes the most sense. We'll see.

I hope we get the answer soon! You can spin that it won‘t hurt us in the long run, but having open coaching spots certainly isn’t going to encourage anyone to commit and we have 2 open scholarships right now.
Underwood calls every player elite, every option mind-blowing, etc. He's know to be a fan of hyperbole. Basically all fans that are dedicated enough to have watched any of those press conferences also know about his hyperbole.
