Whitman and Underwood are a match made in Heaven. As long as we have Whitman, we will be good. He has made the best Football and Basketball hires in a long time. Underwood is held in high esteem. He learned from some of the best. Huggy Bear is a future Hall of Fame coach and Frank Martin has had some nice teams. I feel really good about the program. If we get Garcia we will contend for the Big.

He's made two FB hires in his short tenure. 1st one, I wouldn't call "the best".

But I agree with you that I think JW is going to go down as one of the best in history.

Lovie didn't work out but I don't think it was the worst hire. It was definitely headline grabbing.
I honestly still think Lovie was a great hire at the time and given the situation. I was so excited by that hire, I had friends from OSU and other big programs who noticed and brought it up as intriguing. It was a splash hire. It just wasn't a successful one.

I am optimistic about Bielema, but it's definitely premature to call that a great hire. It seems like a pretty good hire at the time, but it still has to translate to wins.

Could not agree more. The Lovie hire clealry did not work out in the end. It made a splash...but after the splach...sunk. That hire did not set the program back, though, and I think moved it forward is smoe ways long term. It did not move it forward as we would have hoped at the time, but reasonable -- while maybe a stretch-- at the time. BU and BB are strong hires. We have seen that with BU, expect that with BB. We have already seen promising signs with BB and his recuritng/buzz. And he was solid+ at Wisky, even if not so much at Arkansas. Of course, time will tell, but I am optimistic.

We still have bad residual effects from the woebegone Mike Thomas era.......Low points all around in a short time of him getting here...The Beckman lasagna loopiness and dippin on the sidelines was embarrassing....groce was ok at the start but quickly showed his limitations in X's and O's.....His offense of dribbling 20 + seconds on the perimeter then a hail mary shot left a lot to be desired...

I also have high hopes for BB, per his B1G record at wisky, but recruiting is the name of the game to build back fast the speed and depth needed in the B1G.....

BU is the best hire @ UI in a long time and I'll just leave it at that....

Sure hope we get good news on the Garcia recruit soon....would be huge....

Player coach. I like it.
Honest question here: what's to stop a school from hooking up walk ons with sweet NIL money and asking them to pay their own way, effectively being able to stack a roster with extra scholarships? Maybe we can finally get Luther Head to sign some NIL contracts with some guys and pay their tuition.

In theory, I am sure nothing prevents that, but you have to wonder just how much money businesses are willing to spend on players who will never see the floor.

What I want to know is whether future iterations of NCAA basketball games will include actual players, and if so, will it include entire rosters?

I think what he's talking about is taking a top player and not giving them a scholarship and essentially letting them self fund through NIL money.

I think it would have to be some incredible money for an incredible player. But let's say an Anthony Davis lines up a shoe contract worth a million dollars prior to enrolling and then can say no to the scholarship. Hard to imagine it happening but fun to think about!

WOW......I'd forgot about the dude coaching the WBB squad....If I remember correctly, he came here from W-GB with a phenomenal record and fell flatter than a bunny with a pancake on it's head.....lol...that bunny gif kills me everytime.....

So, thanks for the walk down memory lane TC....I just had my famous meat loaf, mashed taters and peas for lunch and it is starting to rear it's ugly gaseous head.......

If that was his suggestion, then, in theory, I am sure nothing prevents that, but good luck landing a top player by saying you aren't going to bother giving them a free ride. I doubt many NCAA players will be sniffing anywhere close to 7 figures. My guess is most will top out in the lower 6 figures. Paying tuition is a sizable chunk out of that. Trying to get a player to do that seems like it's just a big "F you" to that player and not good recruiting practice.

Honestly, only hard to imagine it happening here. Could see it happen in a situation where a school like UNC or Kentucky is involved, and that school doesn't have an open scholarship. In fact, the shoe company might encourage it. Much more exposure playing one year of college ball than doing one year in the G league.

This rather sums up my thinking. Although I also give Coach B credit for showing more of what he's doing, so we don't simply need to take it on faith that he's doing what he should be. The players and coaches are talking about what they're doing, and the more I hear the more tectonic the shift seems to be.

I think all the NIL talk needs a reality check.
Business owners, CEO’s, Corporate Board of Directors, etc…will not be too quick to make 18, 19, 20 year olds the spokesperson or face of the business.
Seriously….
Think about whatever business you want. Someone (individual or shareholders) owns the business. They’ve spent years, a lifetime, or generations creating their brand and reputation.
They are such a big Illinois basketball fanatic that they are going to fork over $100,000 a year to a kid they no little or nothing about? What happens if there is a DUI. An arrest. An inappropriate scandal. Whatever…..
That comes back and bites the reputation of the donor and the business in a big way.
Yes, there are great kids that will sign deals and promote businesses. However, I believe that the bulk of NIL money will be more driven by the individual through memorabilia, social media influence, etc
Just an opinion and we will see how it plays put.
I’m just exhausted reading constant takes regarding business x, y,or z that is needing to “step up” and put their reputation on the line for some kid that might be a good or great basketball player at Illinois- or any other school.

Losing track of the rumors here - still the best guess of this board that it is Anderson for AC3?
