SoCal here
I wear an Illini baseball cap. My SUV has Illini license plate holder.
There is a strong Illini club in OC. Lots of engineering grads recruited from U of I work in SoCal.

Lots of obnoxious USC football fans here. Most did not go to USC.
Dodgers, Lakers and Rams very popular. Nobody cares about Angels, Chargers or Clippers.
Surprisingly pro soccer getting some traction LAFC (even though Beckham has retired)
Beckham actually played for the LA Galaxy. LAFC is much more of "the city's" team while the Galaxy is more of the suburbs team since they play in Carson.

My uncle lives in the Woodland Hills area and is a long-time Clippers fan, so they do exist. :D

I now live in New Canaan, Ct, about 30 miles outside New York City after moving from Illinois where I lived all my life. Believe it or not there are at least 10 people who live here that have U of IL degrees including Dennis Swanson who attends the Church my wife and I go to.
I find the broader NYC Area to be fascinating for this topic, specifically how drastically it could vary based on if you are in Connecticut, the New York Suburbs, the actual five boroughs, Long Island, New Jersey, etc. Is your area pretty decidedly UConn, or is there a bigger mix due to transplants and/or spillover from other regional teams?

I live ~25 miles outside of Charlotte, NC. As a result of a couple of factors (on lake created ~1960 and in a development built 20-25 years ago), nearly everyone in my immediate neighborhood is originally from somewhere else and a sizable majority moved here from out of state (from all over, but predominantly the northeast and midwest).

College sightings are diverse, but the plurality winners in rough order are UNC, Clemson, Duke, NC State, Davidson (5 miles away), Wake Forest and other nearby schools (App State, High Point, Elon, Charlotte) (with that entire group probably around half of total sightings, often worn by kids or parents of kids who attend(ed)), with the other half of sightings being from elsewhere (with the ACC, SEC, B10 and Ivy leagues well represented).

Lived in Mooresville for 7 years in the mid 2000's. You are spot on. I would even maybe move NC State a little higher. Fun story, I was on a hiking trail with my wife in Jetton Park(Cornelius) and I was wearing my Chief logo hat. A couple went jogging by us and yelled I-L-L! Of course, I responded appropriately, and louder than my wife thought was appropriate. My wife(from Maine and has little interest in sports) looked at me and she says, you people are everywhere. I just smiled and said..."It's a beautiful thing". She rolled her eyes and laughed.

That's awesome! First thought as I started to read your hiking trail story was you were going to say you ran into Ron Turner there (who lives in the area but timeline doesn't work). Understand he did some consulting work for the Panthers when Rivera was HC there before retiring for good.

You're probably right about NC State. After UNC, next three on my list are real close and I'm undoubtedly scarred by having a sister and a couple of friends who are Dukies.

Curious if the omission of South Carolina was a mistake?? My sister lives in Charlotte, and I was surprised when we visited that a lot of stores that had apparel would feature the main four schools of North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina and Clemson.

They are in the mix for sure and could have mentioned them, but don't see them as much day-to-day where I am at as the other three schools you mention. In my head, include them in the same bucket as Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Virginia Tech, etc. as schools you see around but not as much as the first several on my list.

I also remember South Carolina and UNC playing in Charlotte a couple years ago, and the crowd was about 60/40 South Carolina. Of course, that doesn't mean all that much, as a lot of fans for both teams traveled and do not live in the Charlotte Area. Hell, if we had played Wisconsin at Soldier Field five years ago, I bet their fans would have outnumbered ours 3:1 ... but now I bet we would easily be able to outnumber their fans. The enthusiasm of each fan base is obviously an essential variable, and Gamecocks fans are definitely "louder" than UNC fans in football, from what I have seen!

Greenville, SC (The Upstate of South Carolina) -- 30 miles from Clemson; 1 hour from Columbia; 1 hour from Asheville, NC:
We're located about halfway between Charlotte and and Atlanta just off I-85

* 60% Clemson
* 20% The Other "USC"
* 5% Georgia
* 5% Various North Carolina schools
* 5% Remainder of ACC & SEC schools
* 5% Remainder of USA

Lots and lots of newcomers to Greenville (mostly from CA and the Northeast) over the past 10-15 years. College affiliation is defined by house flags and casual attire in the local social scene. Illinois and Notre Dame flags flying proudly and often at our residence.

College sports are huge here. 1. Football 2. Baseball 3. Basketball (with the Duke / UNC presence well-represented).

Ignoring the 2016 World Series for a moment, the sports highlight of my 15 years in Greenville would probably be the return home from Orlando following the Citrus Bowl victory and obnoxiously wearing Illini gear for 30 days straight!

I sometimes stop to think about and appreciate the fact that every major sports team in Chicago has won at least one title in my lifetime...and there was a very long stretch of that life where I did not think it would happen. My dad's folks lived full lives into their 70s (mid-1910s to late-1980s) and cannot say that (they lived in Lake View and my grandma bled Cubbie blue for decades). No baseball or basketball titles for them (technically yes in 1917 with the Sox but they would have been toddlers at the time). Bears and Hawks did come through and win a few.

I cannot say for certain, as I do not remember fully, but it is very likely that the first sporting event I ever saw in person would have been with her at Wrigley, as a little kid. Would have been in the early 1970s, prices in the ballpark (pun intended) of the article below from 1969.

Thanks for letting me reminisce. Now can we please get the Illini on that championship train and I can die a happy man.

Here in the NE there aren't that many Division 1 basketball programs so UConn and St Johns dominate the college basketball scene, what little there is. Pro sports totally dominates the NY TV stations sports news with UConn and St Johns being the only college teams that get a mention.

Makes sense for hoops given UConn's incredible success over the last 30+ years and St. John's being a currently-successful program that is right there in the city. However, would you say it is way more diverse in football? I imagine there are a ton of bandwagon Notre Dame fans like in every city with a large Irish and/or Catholic population, but I am curious to hear if the rest has any sort of bias toward a Syracuse, Rutgers, even Penn State, etc. or if it is just truly random, like Michigan, Texas, Alabama, etc.

Just a few minutes from Fort Worth. College sports isnt much here outside of probably mainly TCU. Mostly Cowboys/Mavs/Rangers/Stars in that order. And people RIOT on the Luka trade.

Here in New Canaan, CT there are actually several Illinois grads who are sports fans. I go to the same Church in New Canaan as Dennis Swanson, an Illinois grad, who was the head of ABC sports at one time and discovered Oprah. When my son-in-law, an Illinois grad who met my daughter there, drove us into NYC to see the Duke game last year I was surprised how many Illini fans were at the game. I would say more than Duke had. Not a good game for the Illini but sure had a lot of fans there. Hopefully there will be a lot of fans at MSG for the UConn game this year.
