yup
glad you are coming around on this at the school level, as many , including some very large ones, already prohibit smoking, drinking, premarital sex, etc .

prohibiting "bad behavior" is not a restraint of trade to everyone I know

saying you cant have a part time job , is, and they got away with that forever, until 4 years ago.

So, what will happen since the NCAA lifted its ban, universities will start initiating a ban on pro gambling and that won’t have any issues.

The NCAA is viewed differently. In part because of Antitrust laws. The courts have decided, the NCAA is very limited on restricting behavior.

Then that’s what any prudent university should do. No downside to such a policy. Problem solved, right here on this forum!

Problem solved? Just which university is going to step up first and put themselves at a recruiting disadvantage by restricting anything that the NCAA has already deemed permissible?

Won’t be the SEC, I can guarantee you that. But I really don’t think it will be any one.

I might be wrong, but assume few recruits would really care. The NIL bag is a much, much bigger deal for top talent. And the restriction wouldn’t matter if you’re just low-mid level talent scrambling for a slot.

Seems like a minor issue for most unless they already have a gambling problem. In that case do you really want them?

Very few (if any) analogies are going to be relevant as student athletes are a unique class and have already won multiple multi billion dollar lawsuits.

The point isn’t really debating the merits as they are debatable as you point out. The point is the NCAA was at a legitimate risk (and certainly were going to be sued) and choose allowing freedom rather than restricting student athletes. I think you can agree if that was on legal advice (and it certainly was) it was a wise decision on behalf of the NCAA.

When the courts repeatedly gives you billion dollar judgements for restricting student athletes, you stop restricting student athletes.

No, when the courts repeatedly strike down your business model, you close up shop and shut college sports down. The only folks that win are the lawyers . . .

that is pretty much where it seems it’s headed

let’s face it , college sports that most of us older than 40 grew up loving are over . done , gone . not coming back

what we have now is a hybrid pro / amateur model . it’s different . still fun to watch . but it’s different than before . we choose to follow it but we still lament the changes in how rosters are constructed

Michigan should have to vacate their national championship. But that would require the NCAA to act in a fair and impartial manner, and we all know how that works.

"The NCAA Committee on Infractions announced in August that Michigan had committed multiple Level I violations in relation to impermissible off-campus scouting. The scheme, led by former staffer Connor Stalions, was designed to aid in the stealing of opponents in-game signals. It operated during the 2021, 2022 and part of the 2023 seasons."

A school could try this. But why would a kid pick that school that acts like this. Gambling and legal drugs are legal. Why would you not just go to a school that does not treat them like that.

Bielema looks for TSD: Tough, Smart, Dependable. You want to know your teammate isn’t being forced into bad things by a gambling addiction or losing his focus with drugs. Not dependable. I watched my freshman roommate transform from a brilliant engineering student into a stoner before eventually dropping out. Not smart.

Consider it a test of character with no downside for a truly serious athlete who wants to train and compete beside the very best. The Marine Corps attracts recruits with this sort of cultural reputation.

As Illinois fans, why would we lament the changes? We’re getting a level of players like we’ve never had before. We’re in the conversation yearly as legit Final Four contenders and we’re disappointed in football this year because we fell short of the playoffs. Say what you will, but the changes have been beneficial to the Illini programs. Are you lamenting being mediocre and saying “that’s soooo Illinois” every season???

The previous status quo only seems more "pure" because people got used to it. Athletes and their families were getting paid under the table, coaches and programs were regularly getting wins and championships vacated, shoe company executives were going to jail over college basketball related fraud. If this is a "hybrid pro/amateur model" what do you call that? A "hybrid amateur/RICO model?"

College sports will survive. It will be different. People will get used to it. The previous status quo was unsustainable and the big mistake the NCAA made was not voluntarily making changes sooner.
