So with this plan, theoretically 3 of the 4 P4 conferences could get together to shut the remaining conference out of the playoff entirely then, right? Like let's say ESPN gets the B12's exclusive media rights, the 3 ESPN conferences could agree to only schedule each other, then it would be impossible for B10 schools to get to 10 P4 games right?
I suppose the logical response would be to expand the conference schedule to 10 games.
Not saying it would happen, but just an interesting hypothetical.
My hot take is that the SEC suing LSU fails. I'm not seeing how the conference rules override the underlying issue of restraint of trade for the athletes. The NCAA laid the groundwork for this to fail, and the conference is following them. At least we should find out shortly on that one.
As a fan, I don't like the 24 team playoff idea for the obvious reason of reducing the regular season interest and stakes. I thought 4 was too few, and 12 has worked out pretty well IMHO. But...playing for a seed line is a lot different than playing for your post-season life. On the plus side, more P4 v P4 games might help the lower teams in the P4 financially though. Everyone will want to schedule bottom feeders for an easier win.
Like a lot here have opined, the checks and balances that pro leagues have for long term health to prevent run-away costs and uneven competitive balance aren't there for college football. I guess we're going to see how far the Universities can push it without including the players and what the fallout over the next 5-10 years does to the health of the sport.
