Drew Cayce to Illinois as walk on

Just grabbed a walk on. LaLu pipeline night becoming real

Always good to have quality walk ons for the practice squad and cleanup minutes at the end of blowouts.

Anyone know if this is a guy closer to Trent Meacham's level, or closer to Mike La Tulip's level? Like, does he stand a chance to ever get meaningful time, or is he just a normal walk on?

Did he redshirt his freshman year at Creighton? Does he have to sit out a year at Illinois? He was a walk on at Creighton. Seems he'll go two years without seeing the floor.

A Simeon pipeline and a LaLu pipeline are honestly two of the best pipelines in the entire country you could have. Fully support this decision.

Is this a correct timeline of how his eligibility plays out?

'15/'16: Redshirts at Creighton
'16/'17: Freshman (RS) sits out a second year
'17/'18: Sophomore (RS)
'18/'19: Junior (RS)
'19/'20: Senior (RS)

Some really good nuggets from the LaLu coach in that article.

Oh he'll go more than two years without seeing the floor

The last Illini player from Libertyville was really good. RIP Matto.

Don't expect Cayce to have nearly the impact of a B10 champs starter, but hopefully he'll be a good team addition. Plus, his LaLu ties only help.

see one-time transfer exception:

http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms

basically he can play right away if he wasn't technically recruited by creighton:

Right, but even a non-scholarship athlete may be required to sit out following a transfer of schools. Just because they are not on scholarship doesn't automatically make them exempt and immediately eligible. Kevin Berrardini was a walk-on transfer from Loyola Marymount to Illinois, where he was required to sit out a year, which then gave him the opportunity to transfer again (to Pace University) as a graduate student.

Yep, and that's why LaTulip sat out last year, so he could use the grad student exemption and use his final year somewhere else. If he'd been able to transfer without sitting, he could have just transferred last year.

Is liss gone? Did he get creaned for drew cayce?

He is still on the roster, but I don't think there is a limit to the number of walk-ons. While there is a lot of info available on the scholly limit, I couldn't find anything about a roster limit, except some obscure reference to a 15 player limit on how many you can take to the NCAA championship. Also saw on another board that Kansas had 18 players on their 13/14 team (5 walk-ons). And of course a few articles about 'roster management' which specifically mentioned Crean and Pitino...

What a nice pipeline we are developing to go along with Simeon. I realize he is a walk on, but the relationship must be getting stronger and stronger.

We used to have many walk-on players during the Henson era, some of the teams in the late 80s had more than 10! I recall reading that at some point Title IX caused them to throttle back because it not only looked at scholarship numbers when comparing men/women's sports, but also "participants" which included the walk-on guys. So that's why now you rarely see more than a couple on the roster.
