DC Bobby Hauck out at Illinois

It is an interesting question. Say they spent $70M on the stadium. They could have invested the money at 6% return and received $4.2M annually without touching the money. Would you rather:

1) have the upgrades we made and be done or

2) have an extra $4-5M EVERY YEAR to spend on players AND keep the $70M
I doubt the $100M was donated all at once up front. I'd expect it was pledged, with the actual funds to roll in over a period of years. I could be wrong.

Alum says that he thinks that the football stadium could use a major facelift and that he is willing to write a big check to ge it done.

Loyalty, "Well, we want your check, but we will decide how to spend it."

Alum has his butler slap Loyalty in the face.

I don’t really care how Larry Gies spends his money. That’s his decision. I’m sure he also doesn’t care one bit what anyone on this site thinks of what he’s doing. You don’t become a billionaire by playing to the whims of the crowd.

I’m just not going to apologize for the opinion that between the money invested in the business school and spent on the video board that the better value is with the business school. It’s also inconsistent to say the program lacks resources. The money is there. Decisions are being made to spend those resources in certain ways. Whether that’s right or wrong isn’t for any of us to decide. Josh Whitman is ultimately accountable for that.

I just love that the year after the worst P5 program in history and mortal enemy wins the NC, our battle cry is “11 guys and tackle!”
Sigh.

IU’s ascension makes where we are at feel infinitely worse.

Well, if a donor wants to make a donation with strings attached Whitman has the option to accept or say no.

In the alternate universe where he says no, we have some on the board saying the only thing standing between us and a playoff bid is an upgrade in facilities.

I understand where people are coming from. If someone gave me the option of successive NIL donations of 10,15, 15,20,20, and 20 million vs. The stadium upgrade , I'd pick the NIL. I don't think that choice was given to Whitman.

This adds to the point. If we're spending more and are having lesser results.....that's a problem. We're on our 3rd DC in four games. If what you're saying is true, then this falls at Bret's feet. It's his coaching staff and it's his recruits and portal targets. That defense is an embarrassment. Part of it is coaching, but the majority of it is the talent and athleticism.

Brian Flores couldn't be successful with the guys we run out there. Why is that? Is it the funding or is it the recruiting and coaching evaluations? The latter is a Bret problem and the prior is a donor issue.

We don't seem to have this issue in basketball.

Both things are true. We can always use more money but we also need to be better managing it. I’ve said it a bunch but the ROI on this postal class is extremely bad and we did a very bad job with roster construction. Now a program with limited money will buy out the Montana assistants and hire new staff. That’s more money wasted. Just like the way the Aaron Henry situation played out really hurt the program.

bball has more money but Brad is very good at knowing what the market will be. Neel Ganta does a very good job.

I don’t have anywhere close to gies kind of money so I have no idea how these conversations go, but I would guess there’s no standard approach.

Gies and Whitman probably speak regularly. Whitman keeps the family updated on where the program is, where it’s headed, and what support it needs to achieve success. Gies takes that into consideration when they’re planning their giving campaigns.

I’d bet it wasn’t a “you need to spend this on a massive scoreboard or we’re not giving you money”. I’m guessing it was more like “Mr Gies, football stadium facilities are lacking relative to peers, it’s an area where need investment, this is our plan is we get it”

Gies responds with something like “ok what do you need? What are the expected impacts? How does this fit into the bigger picture etc?” To which Whitman and his team respond .

Then this all goes back to Gies’ people and they decide what to do and come back with a proposal. In that convo theres likely consideration on rax efficiency of the typ of donation etc, i dont know. And im also sure theres a network of alums gies can call to help chip in here and there.

And round and round we go. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next round is happening now and some discussion on defense to of mind.

Long way of saying, I’d be surprised if the decision to donate the money and spend it on a scoreboard vs other things was made in any sort of vacuum. This was probably thought out at various levels. Q

IU’s elevation from a bottom 5 P4 program to a natty in just 2 years is one of the biggest stories in big time sports EVER . full stop . everything went right for them in a short window of time that will most likely never occur for anyone again .

sure we can cry that it should have just as easily been us , but it wasn’t . cignetti happened to be the perfect hire and they hit on 98 outta 100 other things along the way . it defies logic .

I keep believing our time is coming . is it likely in the next 5 years ? no , but our program is light years ahead of 2020 and we are back to relevance and selling out the joint .

I hate saying it but it takes time .

be happy we have a guy like Gies who is not afraid to invest in the program . something tells me more is to come

Gies wanted his donation to have a long lasting impact on the program. Not just paying for players for a couple years.

If I was tasked with spending my billions, I think this is how I would do it too. Who wants to drop a cool million for a player who can then just Skyy Clark you?

Well of course. Nothing i wrote suggests different.

But your foolish if you believe that naming rights wasn't a consideration.

poor spelling aside, that's obviously a consideration. My only point was it's highly unlikely that it was unilateral "here's $70M - this is what you're gonna do with it, Josh."

When you donate $100M, your opinion will carry more weight.
If I recall, the money was specifically donated to make improvements to the facilities. It was to be donated over a period of years and was not to be used for daily operations. It was not available for NIL.

In my opinion, the lack of retention of our defense is entirely a different matter. The players knew that the previous DC was being moved out and was looking for a new position. So they looked for personal landing spots as well.

That falls on BB as he was trying to relocate a favorite son, and the vacuum of leadership lasted far too long, and a young dynamic replacement was not found. Hence the lack of replacements for the outflow.

It was a perfect storm, and the defense will suffer for a couple of years because of BB's Mr. Nice Guy character. Personally, I prefer BB and his character over others who only care about image and micro-successes. If he keeps winning, it will be a blip in our history.

BB is by far the most successful coach in the past thirty plus years. We need him to stay!

It’s mostly all already spent so it’s been donated. Organizations usually don’t announce donations until they have access to the money as that could be extremely problematic, and they definitely don’t rename the stadium until they have access to the money.

I have not seen anything about it almost entirely being spent. I thought the scoreboard and all the stadium improvements were around $50 million. Am I off?

Forget IU-I just want to be at Iowa’s level. I’ll happily take 8-9 wins and a decent bowl game on average with a legit CFP chance every 3-4 years.
Luckily, we aren't far from that level. If 2 bad officiating decisions had gone our way in the IU and UM games and 2022 we would have been a serious playoff contender. Sames in '24 if we had managed to beat Minny or PSU

He’s given half a billion dollars to the university for both athletics and academics. If you think he hasn’t given money for players in both football and basketball idk what to tell you. We needed money to improve the stadium so he wrote 100 million dollar check to help.
Complaints coming from the same people complaining about $8 pretzels at concessions.

Well, both can be true here. Nobody should be complaining if they, themselves, have alligator arms.

That said.....$8 for a pretzel is ridiculous. That's a Wrigley/Soldier Field type of an upcharge. Probably shouldn't be that way at a college event, but that's the beauty of capitalism. The players gets theirs, the school's get theirs and, per usual, it's the fans/students/customers that gets screwed.

Another perspective to this could be that Hauck convinced Bret that he could see the games better on TV from his couch than the box. He’s going to call plays in to Cooper via cell-phone now. Illinois cooked up this story to cover the competitive advantage Hauck will bring by eating Cheetos and drinking orange crush from his couch.
