Dee Brown named Roosevelt University head coach

NAIA is a competitor to the NCAA. It mostly made up of smaller private colleges. In revenue sports NAIA is probably on average somewhere between DII and DIII, but I've read that in some sports, like tennis, some NAIA programs are right up there with good D1 programs.
Yeah in individual sports NAIA athletes can be just as good as your D1s. I have 2 track kids who just graduated going NAIA who could have both gone D1 (talking aTm and Clemson level offers).

In individual sports your performances can still shine through because most times there’s just a “college division” in open competitions so you compete and get recognized with the best.

In team sports it’s harder, because the budgets are smaller, the facilities aren’t as good. So while there’s definitely a possibility there’s D1 talent playing NAIA, an NAIA team won’t have the depth of talent because it can’t compete in other areas.

Well, he has stated that he is coming back to Illinois someday so I guess in his mind whatever reason he left was not egregious enough to close the door forever. And, no, I don't know what it was. I located an article that talks about "the incident" (but doesn't mention what it was, all it says is "personal reasons") and that he plans on coming back someday but I hesitate to post the link since it is a sensitive subject to say the least.

Yes. In football, Zach Grant and Clayton Fejedelem both played at NAIA schools before coming to Illinois. I imagine that there were others, too, but they came to mind.

Mr. Tibbs

southeast DuPage
Wish I was a local. This has been hanging out there as a mystery for me for years.
whatever it was, it didnt stop UIC from hiring him

he needed to get out of town, and not for work reasons but for "personal" ones. that usually means "romantic stuff" with someone besides a spouse, and likely not a UI employee, as that would be a work issue.

its all speculation , and enough has been guessed for me to leave it at that.

I like Dee and wish him well.

May not be economically progressive, however it gives him an opportunity to put his stamp on a program and reap the benefits personally. That may have been more important to him
And it gives him head coaching experience, I think that is the most critical part if he wants to move up in his coaching career - and I'm sure staying in Chicago was a plus for him personally

Back in the 60's and 70's, Quincy College and Chicago State were both NAIA. In basketball one of them would usually best the other to advance out of the region in the NAIA Tournament. Quincy College won a number of NAIA Soccer Championships ( I didn't take the time to check how many). Chicago State went D1 in basketball and QC went D3 in football and D2 in basketball and soccer, though I'm not sure about the latter 2.

Highly doubt he will be welcomed back except for reunions. There will need to be many years to pass before this issue will be forgotten.

Hmm.. Money is not everything...and HC may also help is career and all. But it seems that might be step down in pay? Anyone care to share about what he was making at UIC?
Being the HC means being in charge of all aspects of the team. You don't get the same autonomy as an assistant. Assistants can voice their opinion, but they don't get to make decisions. Being HC also means you get to choose your co-workers. You also get to manage the games. If you are a person who embraces the pressure and has a desire to lead, which I assume Dee is, a few dollars may not make much of a difference. A lot of these guys are motivated by the challenge, not (necessarily...)by the money.

HC Steve McClain made in 2019 $375,000 at UIC, so it appears they pay pretty well.

sounds like someone at illinois will carry this grudge against him to their grave.
