Lou‘s greatest strength was the assistant staff he compiled. His greatest weakness was overruling them on in-game strategy.

This article describes an interesting beginning to Dick Nagy's relationship with Lou:

>>> A product of a blue collar family in Syracuse, he was out of high school three years, working as a milkman and planning to get married when he got a call from Henson to play basketball at Hardin Simmons, a small Baptist school in Abilene, Texas. >>>

In recent years, he followed his son Scott's successful coaching career (who now has over 300 D1 wins and recruited and coached Mike Daum of House of Paign TBT fame) ... Dick Nagy ardent supporter of his son scott RIP.

Had privilege of attending Henson's Illini basketball camp (won on radio contest) run mostly by Coach Nagy--boy could he fire up your rump and make you fly! Called me out for being an overachiever, complement carried with me my whole life. He was as tough for defense as Lou was.

I went to one of those camps too when I was in junior high. I remember being pretty intimidated by him.

I attended in junior high as well - he definitely called you out if you weren’t going 100% all the time- but it was a very good indoctrination of what it took to compete at a high level

He had an impact on many more like me I’m sure - he will be missed

Fast forward to my UI years, I'm in orange crush, hanging around courtside after a loss, and a friend is talking loudly and critically of the in-game coaching decisions. Coach Nagy hears him and they get into a little verbal exchange.
Nagy was the fiery drill sergeant to Henson's patient teaching. He would've loved the treadmill.
