January 2nd feels so long ago. The talk from many were final 4 aspirations.

Tonight: Can we even win another game?

I don't care about how sick and injured the team has been, tonight's effort and execution shows this coaching staff is not up to snuff. 2-26 from behind 3 point line. That is pee-wee level stats, and it is a recurring theme. The players have failed, and the coaching has failed to adjust with the roster construction (also a coaching fail).

I know shooting is contagious, but at some point, the coaches need to accept that this team can't hit 3's. Brad's stubbornness this year is going to drive his seat warm. Two marquis Saturday night games in a row where the team collapsed in every way.

No way to sugar coat it: this season is becoming an utter failure, even if the team wins one more to make the tourney.

They would both take the job … Unless an elite blue blood was begging them to come …
I hope you're right. My fear is that even with NIL dollars, Brad is running the program so far south that it will be like trying to get a good football coach when Lovie and others ran it into the ground. Just like Brad is now.

Need to get someone new after this season to keep the ship afloat. I know that's hard to do with how much Josh owes Brad in a buyout.

Which is why I am so irritated that people keep saying it's irrational to move on from Brad. Here's my question: Do you think Miller and Beard are better coaches than Brad Underwood? If the answer is yes, and you could get one of them... and all of the momentum that's been built in this program clearly feels like it's slipping away- why the hell would you not move on?

Brad's been here 8 years. He's resurrected the program. But he has warts and very little tournament success outside of last years run (mostly thanks to TSJ & Domask). This team is falling apart and we lose Will & KJ to the draft and likely multiple players will transfer- we are in a rebuild again and our reputation has taken a hit.

Too bad Ben isn’t the 40 percent 3 point shooting stretch four he was advertised to be. If he was, we’d be a final four team

That's the problem. I'm sure he is. I think he has a group of kids that aren't.
I don't think Underwood is ashamed. He blames players, illnesses, injuries, referees all day, every day. He has turned from a winner into a whiner. That's a huge problem.

Underwood picked every assistant. He lost others.

Underwood picked every kid on this team, this past April. He lost others.

Underwood is the issue. The kids will be gone in 5 weeks. A 61 year old coach who waxes eloquent about his 38 years of coaching is the guy we need to be concerned about.

Our roster construction is brutal and it's a team completely opposite of what Brad wants. He likes older guys, experienced guys, guys who will punch you in the mouth if needed, guys who hold themselves accountable and he brings freshman along slowly.
He got the players he wanted. He pushed out guys who fit the type you claim he wanted. In fact, a guy like Ty was told he wouldn't see more than 15 mpg on this team. He got starry eyed for freshman talent (those were great) and for some four star HS recruits who he hoped would start playing that way (they didn't) and then added in Ben, believing (and convincing most on this board) that a guy who didn't make any of three MVC teams was somehow going to be an all Big Ten level performer.

This beat down will hurt us for a long time with recruiting.
As true as this is, I can't like this comment. Not trying to say that Underwood is a worse coach than Groce or Weber, but, Whitman cannot let this downward spiral continue or the program will never recover in the NIL era. The only way to save face is to act swiftly.

I went back and looked at some posts from the summer because I remember my thoughts at the time. Ran across this post that I made on 04/22/24

"The insiders keep saying great players are coming in...and at this point they better be. Because if you lose this many players that fans are attached to you have to follow through on the "promises". And if a team of 10 new players finishes middle of the pack how much leeway will fans give Underwood? Terrible chemistry and/or individual issues could derail next season (just like they could many seasons), but will fans still turn out to watch a group of players they aren't attached to? I don't think so. So if this is our new approach every year the staff better do a great job at it, because they won't have any leeway and if they don't have great success I think the fan response will not be good. And (certain) fans kind of drive this whole NIL thing so its a system that could crumble quickly."

I guess people are still turning out to games at this point, but this whole situation shouldn't be shocking to anyone. Underwood has given himself no leeway either. Games like this absolutely cannot happen.

Be interesting to see what tonight's excuses will be.
I can’t even watch the postgame press conferences anymore, but it’ll probably be something like this…

I don't recall a Groce team or a Weber team getting beaten like this.

Granted that the Duke is really good but still.....

At least the team was 19-24 on FTs if you do not add AJ's 0-4. That will help against Iowa.

AJ Reed got 1 rebound in the 1 min he was on the court..

Ben H got 1 rebound in 22 mintues

Booth 1 rebound in 6 mintues.

DGL ZERO rebounds in 17 mintues.

TOMI ONLY HAD 3 TOTAL REBOUNDS IN 32 MINTUES..

Oh and 8% from 3 point range...

The only POSTIVE IN THIS GAME.. 10 ASSISTS to 9 TURNOVERS... and 6 Blocks...

Duke had 20 Turnovers and they still beat us by 43... It helps that they had 28 assists.

WE PLAY IOWA NEXT.. AND THEY LEAD THE CONFERENCE IN SCORING...

Brad says a lot. On day one we were going to be trying to get shots up in the first 7 seconds. That was the first of a long list of coach speaks.

When Brad Underwood was hired, there were all sorts of short teaching videos on some of offense he ran. The offense that Illinois trots out weekly does not resemble anything on those videos.
