Ed Cooley Says Fighting Words

I'm willing to give a college-aged kid more of a pass. These are still 18-22 year old kids and young adults. They will occasionally do and say dumb things.

A D-1 head coach absoultely should know better, particularly when his own program is a certified dumpster fire. If Dan Hurley said this in a similar situation, I'd still be thinking to myself "kind of a tool thing to say". However, at least Hurley runs a very successful program. Ed Cooley needs to worry about doing something to pull his own program out of the dregs of D-1 basketball before saying anything negative about another coach or program (even if indirectly).
To be fair, Ed did run a successful program and got Providence back to relevancy again after some lean years but instead of staying there and showing some loyalty like we've seen Mark Few exhibit or a Randy Bennett or numerous other examples, he turned Benedict Arnold. He's in the same position that BU was in year 2 in terms of the program having to hit rock bottom before establishing relevancy again. Although, it should be easier in the NIL transfer portal era to reset a team and win quicker than before the NIL era

We're missing something with this comment. Something happened with regards to recruiting. It has to have. It's either that or Epps lit into BU to his coach.
This is the only thing that makes sense. Doesn't really matter. Why did go there with the media. Seems incredibly childish.

Damage already done, son. Like school on a Sunday
Well Ed, it appears you said this directly to the media, not one of your players. There are better, more mature replies rather than trying to lie your way out of it. I would love to insert a political staement here, but I won't.

After listening to the press conference again, 2 things really irk me

1. He referenced the UI school as BS. If he had said men’s basketball program it would have diminished his comment somewhat.
2. He made a point to say that he didn’t mention the school’s name so his comment was OK to say. This drew attention to the statement and means that his comments were very intentional and not “ a poor choice”.

It is not acceptable for someone who has a microphone to make public statements about other large institutions that they know nothing about. I really hope that top UI administration is calling Georgetown administrators to insist on a public apology.
I hope they don't. Let it go. The coaching community will be the judge and jury delivering the bad Karma, he is going to get, next recruiting season.

if an elite 8 team is a BS school, what does that make a 9 win Georgetown team that wasn't even close to making the tourney?
That my friend would be Whale sh*#....which is at the bottom of the Ocean!

I agree. I am just trying to understand how a guy with his "experience" could say such stupid things to the media?
The problem is he recognized what he was saying in the moment and doubled down on it. Clearly intentional and clearly a poor representation for his program. What a perfect marriage. A selfish ball hog basketball player paired with a non-aware coach who tried to create a perfect image but it was really a scam

“Dang it would have been nice to have been in the Elite 8 last year, instead we won 9 games/2 in conference. And if anyone is a BS program it’s my Hoyas.”
