English Premier League Thread 2016-2017

Everton lose 1:0 today at Swansea. Toffees continue their usual road form they've had for much of 2017. Swansea showed that they were a desperate team trying to stay out of the relegation zone. Today's win coupled with Hull's loss to already relegated Sunderland puts the Swans 1 point ahead of the Tigers with two matches left to play for each.

Everton next plays Watford at home on Friday in what will be the final match played this season at Goodison Park.

In English Football League news, Newcastle United clinched the league championship after defeating Barnsley 3:1 and Brighton and Hove Albion draw 1:1 to Aston Villa leading the Magpies to secure the title by a single point. The promotion playoffs will feature Reading vs. Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday vs. Huddersfield Town with both legs of those playoffs scheduled to begin next weekend and the play-off final set to take place at Wembley on Memorial Day.

Awesome. I would love to here about your matchday experience afterwards. It's on my bucket list to go to a Premier League or Champions League game (hopefully Chelsea if I'm lucky). I saw Chelsea and City play in St. Louis and that was amazing so I can't even imagine what a game in Europe is like.

it was amazing. my buddy and i were four rows from the pitch in the corner directly behind ox's cross to welbz. there were some fellows directly in front of us hurling traditional english insults at the linesman and any of the united players that came close enough to hear them.

after the match we wandered around the stadium twice looking for the henry statue. then we found a local pub and had a few beers. stumbled onto another pub where we met some locals and had some beers with them.

great fun. great atmosphere. great win for the gunners!

What a turn of events this weekend. Liverpool draw and Arsenal beat United to keep the UCL race wide open. And a huge loss for Hull and a huge win for Swansea. Plus Spurs really choked. I guess it's only fitting that Chelsea will drop points to Middlesbrough tomorrow.

I hope either Fulham or Wednesday get the last spot in promotion. Should be an interesting promo playoffs.

I didn't realize Huddersfield has an American manager, David Wagner. It would be cool to see him make it up. He play with the USMNT in the 90s.

Chelsea defeated West Brom 0:1 today clinching the Premier League title for the Blues.

Everton also defeated Watford today at home 1:0 on a goal in the second half by Ross Barkley. The Toffees have clinched no worse (and likely no higher) than 7th in the standings this season. Everton will also be in the Europa League next season due to Manchester United having won the EFL Cup and also having qualifed for European competition based on their finish in the Premier League which leads to the 7th place team in the Premier League getting that spot. UEFA has already confirmed that Everton will enter the Europa League in the third qualifying round, which is two rounds prior to the group stage in the Europa League. This will happen regardless of whether Manchester United win the Europa League final on May 24th vs. Ajax or of what happens in the FA Cup Final on May 27th between Chelsea and Arsenal.

Also, with Everton back in the Europa League, hopefully I won't get a repeat of this feeling from watching my team:

Looking more and more like Hull City will be the third team relegated this season. They would have to get at least a win and a draw in their final two matches at Crystal Palace and vs. Spurs and also make up a 7 goal differential in the process between themselves and Swansea to stay up.

What a season for Chelsea. I'm so grateful that we were able to get Conte. He and Mourinho both are very demanding managers but I feel like players are more willing to work hard for Conte. I guess we will see if that is true in the next couple years and I really hope that Abramovich has found a good match. I'm tired of changing managers constantly.

FYI the trophy presentation will take place after the game against Sunderland next Sunday.

Spurs throttled Leicester City 6-1 and Harry Kane scored 4 goals to give him a 2 goal lead over Lukaku for the Golden Boot. If he hangs on, it will be back-to-back Golden Boot awards for Kane.
