Do players have to be loaned out before the deadline? Or can loans be made any time? 2 Americans, Zelalem and Miazga, still need to be loaned out. And maybe Pulisic too.

depends on the league into which the player is loaned. each league has their own window closing day/time and i believe loans fall under the same time restrictions as permanent transfers.

David Luiz is back! Not a great CB but he plays with heart and is better than nothing or over paying for someone else.

Really like the Sissoko deal for Spurs. I think he's better than Lamela, but Lamela is off to a great start this season so I don't think Pochettino takes him out of the starting XI. But Sissoko might replace Dele Alli if he keeps playing poorly.

Sissoko had a great Euro, but he wasn't very good last season. Who knows which version the Spurs get? As for Lamela, I think he continues to start, deservedly so.

Sissoko will mainly be cover for Dembele, who is currently suspended and has a knack for getting injured at the wrong time. Poch will be able to mix / match the 2 of them as well as Dier and Wanyama, but Sissoko can also play in a more forward role which will also allow him flexibility in changing formations (4-3-2-1 to 4-4-2 or 4-3-3).

Right. Dembele was absolutely brilliant last year, probably the most irreplaceable piece on the team (save Kane for whom there literally was not a warm body to replace him). Wanyama and Dier probably shouldn't be played in tandem, and Mason and Bentaleb just weren't quite good enough.

30 million is too much and a classic Euro/World Cup star overpay, but with Champions League money and EPL TV money flowing in, you gotta do what you gotta do and Sissoko makes the pieces start to fit together for a 4-competition grind.

Having only 3 center backs is insanity but ohhh welllll.

Having only 1 forward (last season) was insanity too. But it worked. Really insightful post.

In case you missed it, Levy got NUFC to agree to 6 million per year over 5 years. And if Sissoko doesn't finish his contract, the annual payments end.

It did, but only through great luck. One twist of an ankle or a knee to Kane probably would have made the difference between Spurs' title challenge and falling out of the top 4 entirely. Their experiments with Nacer Chadli leading the line in cupcake Europa League games were not pretty.

There is Cameron Carter-Vickers as a 4th CB who is supposedly a good prospect (and an American passport holder!), but he's 18 and has literally never played in a first team professional match. Not sure he's ever even been in the matchday squad. And Dier could play there too in a pinch I suppose.

My rule of thumb is always that a team playing in the Champions League should have two full squads of players that you're confident in. Wanyama, Janssen, and Sissoko fill three of those trouble spots. I'm not so sure about the mystery 4th CB or whoever would be the Eriksen replacement (Josh Onomah? Tom Carroll?)

These are certainly first world problems for a Spurs fan who remembers well the days of Pascal Chimbonda and Steed Malbranque being first team regulars, to name a few, but still.

The confidence I had in predicting LFC in the top four is waning since Klopp decided that Moreno with Milner as cover is sufficient for LB options.

Gonna be some frustrating moments for us Liverpool fans. At least we have the greatest tradition in all of sports, "You'll Never Walk Alone!"

At this point, CCV is the 4th CB and Onomah is probably the first choice behind Eriksen if Son is deployed to the wing. I feel pretty good about Onomah being able to spell Eriksen. I think having Sissoko in a more forward role while inserting Winks or Carroll alongside Wanyama is an option, but I think I trust Onomah at the 10 more than either of those two at the 8. For the 4th CB, with the Wanyama spelling Dier more, he can drop there in a pinch, or you can rotate Toby/Jan alongside Wimmer. Toby and Wimmer played really well together when Vertonghen had that long injury spell.

Are you saying a team should have 22 capable players? That's impossible. Not even Barca or Real Madrid have confidence in 22 players.

Nice day at "new" Anfield, other than Lucas' unintended generosity. Mane can be very impressive.

Chelsea was very fortunate today. Costa kicked the defender in the head on his bicycle kick goal. It was clearly dangerous play, and 90% of refs would disallow the goal.

Not really. Swansea should've had a man sent off, Cahill got fouled leading to Swansea's 2nd goal, and Chelsea could've been awarded a penalty (it was questionable). Needless to say the refs didn't have a good day, but Chelsea was far from fortunate.
