Any possible candidates named for defensive coordinator position?
Not sure where I saw/heard it, but expect a similar timeline to last years OC hire so it will be a while is what I'm getting.

I'll have more on this later but Illini fans should recognize that Cushing last name. His older brother, Matt, was a TE at Illinois in the mid- to late-90s and then spent part of 6 seasons in the pros.[/QUOTE

Josh Whitman, his fellow TE (albeit only in 1997) was also in attendance at the introductory press conference.

Couple of interesting notes I saw from his press conference:
-Wants the program to not only go after the conference championship but the national championship. Pretty lofty goal there I gotta say and it's good to hear. Though I'm honestly not sure how he's going to be able to do that in a conference like the OVC that, aside from Jacksonville State, basically has a bunch of also rans and mediocre teams.
-One thing Cushing did mention was that he was wanting to recruit more players within about a 2-3 hour drive of the Charleston area. Not quite sure how I feel about that. Don't get me wrong you can find some great players in central Illinois but it's still gonna be able to recruit areas like Chicago and St. Louis and even down into Texas and Florida. Him having a background as a recruiting coordinator will certainly help them getting guys no matter where they go.

Google maps says Charleston to Chicago is 2 hours 52 minutes. St Louis is closer. Indianapolis is 2 hours.

I knew St. Louis and Indy were roughly that close. I honestly that Chicago was a longer drive than that. Well than I retract that portion of my comment. It's still gonna be key to go to those areas in addition to Texas and Florida.

"ROD SMITH will get a whopping $200,000 raise after his first year as football's offensive coordinator, earning $700,000 next year and $750,000 in 2020 under his proposed contract extension. Smith now earns $500,000. His new salary puts him "just inside the top half of the Big Ten," according to Brown."

For as much as he was able to calm my nerves about watching the O&B offense this year, give it to him! He earned it. Let's hope we build on this year and see some consistency with next year's version.

they could but they dont have to have a DC designation.
I've never heard of a P5 school completely going without at least one DC, even if it's basically a throwaway title. Not saying it couldn't or shouldn't happen, nor that UI couldn't be the first (at least in modern football), but yeah, just never heard of a team not having someone labelled DC.

I am with ya there but nothing would shock me with Lovie

From a management standpoint, it is one of the easiest ways for executives to fail (holding onto their old job). I think it would be a bad idea to be head coach and defensive coordinator.

I would be completely shocked if they did not go find the best available DC. I think the Lovie as DC talk is kind of laughable.

Well its trending that way. Lovie will be more hands on and is ultimately putting it all on his shoulder if the defense does not improve. Also they are sticking with the scheme and there isn't anyone more familiar with it than Lovie.
