Baltimore Ravens RB coach Thomas Hammock to be named the new head coach at NIU with a press conference set for tomorrow at 10 AM.

Hammock was a star running back for the Huskies in the late 90s and early 2000s whose senior season was cut short due to a potentially life-threatening heart condition. Hammock was a RB coach at NIU in 2005-2006 with other coaching stops since he graduated including time at Wisconsin and Minnesota. He has been the Ravens RB coach since 2014.

And he'll win 8.5 games per year for X years before leaving for another job. They've got some kinda voodoo continuity going on up there.

Limited geographical competition from other MAC teams, struggling P5 school in-state (Illinois), very uncommon recruiting target crossover with other P5 school in-state (Northwestern).

Indy's Offensive Line was way too successful for Dave DeGuglelmo to go anywhere... what's that they fired him today after his O-Line lead the league only allowing 18 sacks?

I get that Reich is an offensive coach, so Phair might feel a little more safe, but having been hired by McDaniels might have him looking over his shoulder.
I thought the GM hired him before McDaniles because he thought that highly of him?

It is funny, on the recommendation from this board, I started following football scoop on twitter once Hardy resigned. They have been all over all the coaching changes before they have been announced. I have not seen ONE tweet about Illinois's open slots. Everyone always says Lovie has his stuff locked down. Well here is some more evidence.

Football scoop normally isn't very pro Illini anyway. But yes Lovie and JW rarely let anything slip.

I don’t know about that. I mean sure their articles can be pretty opinionated, but I can’t recall what, or if, they wrote about Lovie. But in terms of their information, I find them about as neutral and straight forward as anyone.

Rod Smith and Cory Patterson were hired on January 19 last year, which happened to be a Friday. So we are a few days past that obviously but a few day before the next available Friday. Is there a particular reason they were announced on a Friday or is that just random? I’d have to believe the hires will be announced this week or something’s up.

We are no longer in a dead period so the coaching staff is on the road recruiting during the week.

They are back in town on Fridays since they usually host Official Visitors on that day.

The hires could be done for all we know and they just haven't been announced yet.

FWIW the KC Chiefs fired their DC today. Not sure if he has any history with Lovie or if he is someone we would be interested in.

Not sure a 68 year old with tons of NFL experience and head coaching experience is going to want to come in and be the DC-in-name-only (assuming Lovie is really running the defensive show.) Would think we are looking at someone for whom the DC-in-name-only title is a step up rather than a step down. Also not sure he would be much help with recruiting, both from an age perspective and the fact that most of his college experience was with Army. No disrespect at all to Army, but would think recruiting for Army football is a whole different animal than recruiting for most college football programs.

Not hard to predict that 1 out of 2 hires to a staff like Illinois will be "unexciting" lol.

I agree with you; I think we are looking for someone quite a bit younger. The weird thing is this has dragged on for so long, anything could happen and I wouldn't be all that surprised.
