To play devil’s advocate, or to take a very jaded point of view, if the premise is that a draftable player does not want to risk injury and thus risk future earnings in the NFL, in other words, a purely financial reason, why play in a CFP either? Again, just playing devil’s advocate, but looking at it purely in financial terms (which, as far as I can tell, that is exactly how NFL draftable players in non-CFP bowls look at it), an NFL-caliber player is risking future earnings as much in a CFP game as in a non-CFP game. And if your CFP team advances, that increases the risk of injury. I know it’s for the championship, but only two teams will be vying for that in the end. So, the good players in the other CFP teams will have taken the risk for basically no reason, or rather, no better reason than those who opted out of the non-CFP bowl games.

I have Gabe going 5th to 7th rounds. But I believe he will be on a roster and by 2nd or 3rd year rocking it on Sundays.

Because most of these guys WANT to play. They are at this level mostly because they love playing football and its probably not an easy thing for them to leave their teams to sit out. Playing in the CFP for almost everyone is meaningful enough to tip the scales in favor of playing over the financially safe decision. There's also a potential benefit to playing in that a really strong showing in the CFP could actually boost stock in a way that a regular bowl game cant do.

I don't think it's sitting out the bowl games per se, it's more about the month long break before the bowl games. Gives pro prospects a chance to get a jump start on draft prep. Focus on individual skill development vs team practices. And there is a finite # of days before the draft. The only way this ever slows is if NIL is tied to bowl performance. Might be worth that one more game to collect the million for the season.
This really makes sense. I can see both sides of this issue. But, why isn't this in NIL agreements? I understand why schools wouldn't want to do that. It would have to be mandatory across the NCAA and enforced. They'll never win that one. The whole collegiate-pro sports landscape is going to change pretty soon. We just have to learn to life with it.

My question has always really been one thing only... and that's what is it about sitting out the bowl game? What's the defining reasoning of sitting out this game vs Tennessee that differs from, for instance, the home game against NW.
I believe we'll see this in the next couple years. I guy has demonstrated his value and just decides to opt out of the last few games. In fact, the arguments that many make in support of players opting out of bowl games holds for the last few inconsequential games of the year. Actually, it holds for any player who thinks that quitting on the team won't hurt his draft status.

It only stops when there's a financial penalty/reward.

Is it?

Harlem Globetrotters games are meaningless. People still go. The NBA All-Star game is meaningless. People still go. When Liverpool goes on a preseason U.S. tour and plays their backups against Man City's backups at some random NFL stadium that's very meaningless. It sells out immediately.

One definition I found for the word "exhibition" was "(in sports) a game whose outcome does not affect a team's standing." Seems to fit.
It's definitely not an exhibition. It counts in the rankings and it counts for historical record. It counts for player stats.

As to attendance, you're definitely right. You go because you believe the game will be entertaining or because you just generally enjoy watching your team in person.

Ironically, we are all but certain to have more fans at the "meaningless" bowl game than at the NW game.

Jacas is probably a late day 2/early day 3 NFL draft pick.

Biggest issue he is going to have at the next level is if he can be anything more than a rotational run stopper and become someone who can win on obvious passing downs.
It’s actually the exact opposite. He lead the B10 in sacks… I think he’s proven more than enough as a pass rusher. Run defense, if anything, was his one weakness.

"With the 25th pick in the 2026 NFL draft via a trade with the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys select Gabe Jacas, EDGE, Illinois"?

Most projections I see have Dallas picking either Damon Wilson II from Mizzou, Avieon Terrell from Clemson, or Francis Mauigoa from Miami (FL) in the 1st round.

I've seen Jacas projected early 3rd round to Cleveland with some having him going as early as early to mid-2nd round to Cincinnati.

I get why a player would opt out, but I don’t understand why we as fans just accept it and applaud it. We wouldn’t accept or applaud a player in the pros sitting out a postseason game and the college players these days are getting paid pro money. Of course, we’ll continue to see this as long as their money is not tied to pay-for-play.
And that’s coming. We will eventually have NFL style contracts.

Players aren’t opting out of the cfp. Bowl games are basically exhibition games

There's enough smoke out there that players have opted-out of the CFP games, but it's a little more complicated than Jacas or J.C. Davis. These are situations where guys are playing through injuries and the player's family/agency/network decide it's better to "stay" injured and maintain their draft status. Or they elect to have surgery now to be healthy for draft prep instead of playing and having surgery when the season's over.

JC Davis better play in the Senior Bowl if he’s skipping this game. He needs better tape. Resting on your laurels as a mid to late round guy isn’t a good look for NFL GMs. At that range you are looking for guy that at the very least loves the game. Sitting out a bowl is a negative there for sure. I think he got bad advice here

I also see the view that if he’s a bit banged up not risking putting bad tape out there too by playing. That could be it.

This would be unprecedented. A starting QB for a playoff team is considering opting out and transfer now.

His foot hasn’t been right all season
