As much as everyone is bashing our play, this is not the same Maryland team that has been losing non-stop. They seem to have figured some stuff out. It was only a matter of time, really. This Maryland team is too talented to continue sucking.

That was good D by Hawkins on that last shot. Maybe stick him on Ayala more in the second half.

It's my fault. Being on the game thread does not have a great experience for Illini victory. Not a lot of significant data on this (doesn't happen a lot), but I will get off now. Enjoy the rest of the game.

They shot 53% on one fewer field goal attempt compared to our 41%. Statistics would say we’re in a pretty decent spot only down 2; however… it’s not like they’ve been shooting 53% on step-back 2s. Too many dunks and layups for the Teprs that half.

It’s easier to forgive the offensive woes if he’s locking it down on D but Scott is cooking us. Hopefully we can grind one out because they look lifeless.

One of the rare games we’ve played this year that didn’t have a massive run by either team. I can’t see them staying this hot shooting all night but our defense has been awful.

Effective teams are usually multi-dimensional on offense. Without Kofi and Belo, we are pretty one-dimensional: we are overly-reliant on our 3-pt shooting. Belo taking a bunch of shots doesn't make us multi-dimensional. It keeps us one-dimensional. That's probably not going to help us win this game.

We need Belo to get our frontcourt players easy buckets and our 3-pt shooters open shots. Once both of those groups are humming, it will become easier for him to score as well.

My take is not a thing wrong with defense other than a height disadvantage that MD. is using quite well. More of a problem on the offensive end with too many little blunders leading to turnovers and fumbles by open bigs. These kids are working hard on defense, but MD. is making some tough shots and shooting with confidence and aggressiveness. Our guys seem to be executing a bit better when slowing down and running half-court offense with crisp and accurate passes and cuts.

Maryland sure has a wide bell curve relative to hustle, execution, shot-making, and defense. Unfortunately, we are seeing their best...but only down 2...with the Orange Blitz raining 3s coming up!!

Ok but He just stands around perimeter doesn't have any threat to drive. His only offense is a 3 which He hasn't been nearly as good this year as last.

Why do we always suffer 10min mark to end of first half?? Last 7 games:

Missouri 14, Illinois 13
Minnesota 15, Illinois 13
Maryland 25, Illinois 9
Nebraska 13, Illinois 12
Michigan 12, Illinois 12
Purdue 19, Illinois 12
Maryland 17, Illinois 14

And we won most of these by double digits…

I hope Damonte goes full DMFW in the second half and brings us a win, and quiets the haters on here.

That said, there’s no foul trouble - I think Brad may have had Damonte at the 4 knowing he was thin at the 5. With no foul trouble, Hawkins or BBV should guard Scott. (Or Grandi, but he’s got two).

Only 5 fouls on each team so far. At least we don't have a stoppage every possession.
