The rule: "Targeting is when a player makes forcible contact with an opponent that goes beyond a legal tackle or block, or playing the ball. This includes leading with the crown of the helmet, or making contact with the head or neck of a defenseless opponent"

Both players literally made contact with his head. First one with both hands...second with a forearm shiver.

We have had guys ejected from games for way way way way less egregious contact. There is no explanation for no targeting there. None.
Even just unnecessary roughness. But no flag!?

The DIA needs to put together a replay of every single non called target going back at least to the Iowa hit on Brandon Peters and send it to the B10 and NCAA and ask them to clearly clarify what is and is not targeting. We have had WAY too many of those - most obvious - waived off and it has become completely ridiculous.

They are getting increasingly aggressive about letting those go, but only ever after a lengthy review. Worst of all worlds.

Both hits were directed right at the head there though, regardless of intent. I don't agree with the call. Players got very committed to avoiding the head over the last 5-10 years, and that will wane if you call them this way.

And to the extent the players we've seen down today are missing next week, I mean, words don't describe the level of catastrophe and utter cruelty for our chances in a much more important, season defining game.

Illinois football-tastic.
This is why I wish the bye was after this game similar to the Penn St game

The big ten refs are the liquid on the bottom of a garbage bag that smells like sweaty socks. That call was egregiously bad. That being said. we have lost 3 or 4 players. What the hell are our starters still doing in the game. Get them the F out Brett without any more injuries to starters.

The only thing they call strictly regardless of intent anymore is when the defender lowers his head into a hit.

If you keep your head up and clearly make the effort to lead with the shoulder they're not kicking kids out anymore even when helmet contact happens.

But that play is a classic example of how a "best effort" standard doesn't protect the defenseless player very effectively.

No kidding. Gotta love how the announcers changed their tune after the non call.

That type of play has been targeting in every single game I've ever watched. Receiver was completely defenseless and 2 shots to the head. I guess can't suspend an Oregon player for the next game due to this happening in the 4th quarter, because that's all I'm getting out of that noncall
