Conference play is no joke. Credit to UMD, they’ve played great two-point defense this season and have managed to stifle our offense. Hawk needs to stay out of foul trouble. The tides turned once he picked up his second. Thankfully, Dain hit some free throws and gave us some good minutes at the end of the half.
Let’s see what adjustments we make out of the half.

At least we were able to hold the lead going into the half. We need to play a lot stronger and with tenacity on defense. You don't win by standing around watching. Need to come out with fire and push it to a double digit lead if we can. Stagger them a bit.

Not sure why Dain gets so much hate on this board. He's not that bad defensively... yeah, he might not be great against top tier big men like Edey... but he's definitely not bad defensively. He's a big body to have out there and be physical.
I’d argue the hate also comes from his selective rebounding. He really should be more of a force in that area.

This embarrassing how easy were just giving them open lay up smh
Jameer Young better than MSU guard, very fast and decent size for PG. A couple other match up issues. Have rotated poorly on some playes but overall Maryland has players to give us issues.

Gonna be one of those B1G games for sure.

You just knew Maryland would wait til this game to show up this year.

Thought Dain’s aggressiveness on the defensive glass was the best part of his final 3 or 4 minutes there and really what the rest of the team has been severely lacking today. Great minutes by him, and good to see him see some FTs go through

I will like to see Hawkins and Dainja in the game together.Dainja on Reese cause Hawkins is struggling to keep up with him.

We are not playing good fundamental basketball as a whole, but we are also still up at halftime somehow. Feeling good about the rest of the way after the half.
But specifically, defensive help, awareness, and anticipation is horrendous. Add in some terrible decisions in passing to guys in white uniforms, not to mention a couple to red, is grade school level, and you can get beat by anyone.

The good news is that all can be fixed and this game easily won. Need energy and focus....throughout the lineup. But hitting shots and FTs is a good thing for our guys.

This is the perfect example of a more talented team of veterans playing down to the level of a lesser talented team. The cause? Lack of focus throughout the lineup. Need to bring focus and energy. Maryland has done that and been able to close the talent gap.

Hawk's defensive value is blatantly evident when DD is in....but so is Hawk's lack of skill around the rim when DD is in. Kind of a tradeoff, but Hawk brings value in a myriad other ways.
