football coaches, just because it is a short yardage play does not mean you need to run it through the 1 or 2 hole. You can run the ball at any part of the field. You could do a roll out option, you could do an RPO, you could do some misdirection, you could even do a play action pass. I assure you, running straight forward directly into the teeth of the defense is not the only possible play call.
