Ben got a deservedly bad rap in the early season last year for his defense, but by year end it was a lot better. I still go back to the job he did on TKR late last year to support the idea he can defend someone like Toppin in the post. Now that he has added 25 pounds it should be even easier for him. He won't stop him, but I think he can slow him down without fouling out. We could play Z on their 4 and he can help with and hunt blocks on Toppin, while Mirk or Ben guard him. And Jakstys can give us some minutes as well. Toppin may be the best big in the country, but I don't think we have to worry about depth in the frontcourt when defending him.

I think the only way they win is that if someone else on TT has the game of their life, or we just choke. In the past I might worry that some unknown would make 8 of 10 threes or something against us, but I don't worry too much about that or the choking aspect. We have veterans. They will find a way to get going if shots aren't falling in the beginning. And they can help the freshman acclimate to what I hope is a crazy atmosphere tonight.

So, my prediction is we start fast, get up by 12 in the first half, then make our free throws and hold on to win by 9 - Illinois 92, Texas Tech 83.

Tomi is out. He's hinted at the idea that he actually will wear it or something similar but also that it would only be when all the Eastern Block players are playing. I believe tonight will not be the night that the fit debuts.

ESPN Analytics has also bumped us up over 70%

I believe neither of these take player injuries into account, however (could be wrong on this)

Nothing to do with the game, but Texas Tech itself:

~ 30 years ago I was a greenhorn working on a chemical plant project financing on the Gulf Coast. The senior chemicals business manager for our company at the existing plant was a solid guy: Bob. Probably early 50s, chemical engineer, no-nonsense, laconic West Texan. Over lunch (killer BBQ in a literal shack) I lamely attempted conversation and asked Bob where he was from.

Bob: "Lubbock."

Me: "Oh; I know that Texas Tech is in Lubbock. Did you go there?"

Bob: "Yes."

Me: "What else is in Lubbock besides Texas Tech?"

Bob: "The horizon."

:ROFLMAO: That still makes me chuckle decades later.

Am looking forward to seeing what the team has under the hood as the rubber meets the road this evening. :illinois:

Go Illini. Looks like the Mich game probably won't go into overtime. Looks like Mi will begin to pull away at the start of the second half.

Get ready for it. Our game will be "joined in progress." I can't tell you how this pisses me off. Network schedule makers can't get it thru their thick heads that a college game is rarely completed in 2 hours. It took the NFL telecasts decades to figure out a football game rarely (practically never) is completed in 3 hours. That's why they now account for it by scheduling games 3 and a half hours. Duh.
