I have never seen a team that gets shown up by an opposing player and then proceeds to let him do whatever he wants and it doesn't seem to bother any of them.

and this was classic big ten "we need a premium close game" officiating:
- team gets out to ~15pt lead
- "whoa we can't let this get out of hand"
- asymmetric whistling for 10 minutes, teams don't actually know what's a foul any more
- "ok it's close again, we can maybe relax the whistles for the last 3 minuts"
- hooray we got overtime!
