When Coach Bielema made Hank an offer, it might have looked like he was trying to make inroads with Illinois high school coaches starting with one of the most successful coaches in the state. Credit to him and his staff for seeing what Hank could become for this program. In recruiting, some things aren’t measurable when it comes to players like Hank.

He also had an offer from Iowa State, which was a much more successful program at the time. He took a risk coming to Illinois, and we should be grateful for him sticking it out.

Being named the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year and the fastest player in the CS8 conference (home of Kenny Boyle, Malik Turner, Zack Grant, Wes Lunt, etc) history with more than 1,000 yards passing, rushing and receiving didn't hurt.

Hanks parents, Mark and Helen met and graduated from University of Illinois' medical school in 1995. Hank's grandparents, Keith and Carolyn Beatty, also graduated from Illinois. Illinois is in his blood. That made a big difference.

And yes, all three of my sons played at Rochester, so I am a bit of a homer. So there is that..........

I had the pleasure of watching Hank in high school too. He's a gamer and finds a way to win. He played a huge role in one of our state titles. Barring injury, it would not surprise me to see Hank lead the NCAA in punt return average. He was 4th last year.
