How to watch the Illini

Sling was pretty good except that it doesn't get the broadcast channels by default for some reason. If there was a game on CBS or Fox it was a bit of a challenge to watch.
I agree. Sling gives the Big Ten Network and, FS1 and, FS2 with its sports pkg on Sling Blue. I have a tv that is only connected to regular broadcast channels for CBS and Fox. Costs in the low 40s and I am sure that is with an add on or 2.

I do and it works just fine for btn and all the other sports channels. Like I mentioned earlier though you won't get the broadcast channels with those packages so it can be challenging to get some of the national broadcasts
If you live within 20 miles of the station, old fashioned rabbit ears work just fine for broadcast channels. Some of the powered inside antennas work up to 40 miles. They cost ~$20. If the local station you want is VHF, then you will need an antenna with the 3' poles. The new "HD" (BS marketing) flat plate antennas do not pick up VHF.

I have an antenna in my attic left over from the old analog TV days. Pulls in HDTV like a champ. Crystal clear.

I have HuluLive and haven’t missed a game in years due to channel availability. You can also record the games as well as watch from your phone or computer if you’re not at home.

Plus there’s lots of good tv shows

What do you cord cutters use and pay for internet? When I factor that in, I don't see the savings unless you drop your provider for several months. A couple of years ago I got my Roku devices and was all ready to cut the cord, but when I called to cancel, Xfinity gave me a pretty sweet deal. The deal is up in a couple of months and I want to be ready to cut the cord.
I pay 65 bucks (not including tax for YTTV and about 70 or so for 200 MB download speed for cable internet. That saved me 100 bucks per month with all of the extra fees that Xfinity tacks on like 10 per month for the DVR box and 10 per month for extra TVs.

I appreciate the feedback. That sounds more in line with what I was hearing for internet and I have similar download speeds. The problem with YTTV was no Hallmark channel (happy wife, happy life).

The retention guy told me to use the Xfinity app on Roku so I didn't have to have extra boxes and he suggested trying the free 20 hours of DVR space to avoid paying extra to record more. It works for us and is cheaper than internet + streaming service by quite a bit.

YTTV does have Hallmark as a add-on. Another $5 a month I think. Had it during the Christmas season then canceled. Like you, the wife made that call!

I wish that was the case because I really like YTTV. I think you're referring to Hallmark Movies Now, a $5.99 add-on, which does not have the current movies available on the Hallmark channel, which has new movies (but same plot) starting in October. Lucky you, but my wife would not be pleased with that. She probably has the date of the first new Hallmark Christmas movie already on her calendar.

They're all the same plot as far as I can tell. ;-)

And to contribute to the thread I have streamed through AT&T TV NOW (name changing to Direct TV Stream next week)'s Max package and between that and ESPN+ there's only been one college football or basketball game* I haven't been able to access that I've wanted to in 3+ years. And with a simmering gambling problem that encompasses a lot of games.

I bet most if not all can guess which game I'm referring to.

Sling is fine if you are on a super strict budget but I can’t stand it. You only save $15 per month but if you want to watch anything in two (or more) sittings you have to fast forward to where you left off. This occasionally happens if you take a long break too. The app has no memory. I also think it is slightly less reliable than YouTube TV - it used to be worse. I think the open question is if you can use that subscription to purchase some of the ancillary BTN add-ons. Inevitably there are some games at the beginning of the season where you have to get BTN plus and other channels.

I ended up getting YouTube TV. So far, I like it! Recording a few 1-hr highlight games of the football team tonight. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Had an interesting experience with youtube tv. They sent me a promo for a free month and 3 month discount. I signed up and they charged me full price immediately. When I contacted them, they said I used a promo last year, so they wouldn't honor the promo they sent me. I spent about a half hour figuring out that they see this as a legitimate business practice, not an error on their part. Of course I cancelled and will be very careful with them in the future.

There are probably a few more folks out there that used a promo last season. Beware if you're offered something this season!

Just an update for anyone in the St. Louis area.. The game on Saturday was listed for Fox but because both channel 2 KTVI and Channel 11 KPLR are both owned by the same company they had the NFL game on Fox 2 and the Illini vs Nebby game on channel 11. So in the future if you don't see the game on Fox 2 check KPLR 11 next. (if we have more games on Fox itself)

And this is why I have multiple Gmail accounts with their passwords saved on chrome. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Does that actually work? I would have thought that their systems would recognize the IP addresses of your devices.

Yes, I used it and had the same issues. Their search function is worthless. I finally found the game by going up to the "choose team" option and choosing Illinois. Then from the top list of featured content on the Illinois tab/page you can scroll right/left through them to find the two recent men's hoops exhibition games.

One of the worst user interface I've ever seen....

Took me forever to find it on Roku. It's there though.
