If you a had to live in one of these towns for work or family reasons..how would you rank these options?

Bloomington/Normal
Peoria
Decatur
Dekalb/Sycamore
Charleston/Mattoon
Springfield
Danville

I don't know enough about most of them to weigh in.
I like the Charleston/Mattoon area better than Danville, but it could be the parts of those towns that I have experienced. Danville has been mostly the Route 1 corridor.
I won't venture a guess on the others.

Lived in Decatur for 18 years = STAY AWAY
I'd select Bloomington out of the list, Peoria would be 2nd

I have lived in the DeKalb environs for decades. Typically I'm over there at least once a month.
I grew up outside Peoria a very long time ago.
Have family in Springfield that I see a couple-three times a year.
They all seem to have a taint of urban blight. Unfortunately Illinois doesn't seem to have the same vibrancy that I have seen in other cities. (I am not trying to be political in my assessment.)
Of all the cities listed I would probably choose DeKalb. Maybe because I am most familiar with it. Sitting on the edge of Metro Chicago you're not landlocked by other Metro areas. Still it's an easy trip to the city to work or see the attractions.

I need to edit my Mattoon/Charleston answer. Mattoon had a huge problem with their water supply this summer. There was a deadly algae in the lake where they source their supply. It was undrinkable, couldn't shower in it, dogs couldn't drink it. Of the two, choose Charleston or a place with a great well.
