It is not about predicting how good a private school is, and it is not about the enrollment of the school. It is about the ability to recruit for private schools vs the strict boundaries of a public school (especially small schools). I understand in bigger cities (Chicago) that kids may be able to go to more than one high school based on where they live or maybe based on courses that are offered that the school closest to them does not. In rural school districts, the next school may be 30 to 40 miles away. You don't have a choice unless your family moves. I don't understand how this is so hard for some people to realize. Maybe I should put it in a context that most on this board would understand...

How well do you think that Illinois would be able to compete with the rest of the B1G if Illinois was not allowed to give scholarships and recruit?

Do you actually know that any of Yorkville Christian's team was recruited and is on a scholarship? Or are you just speculating?

No private school should be allowed to participate in any 1A tournament. If you can't put them all in a tournament by themselves then put them all in the highest class. Recruiting is well known way back to the 70's and probably earlier. They definitely have an unfair advantage.

So would that include your Effingham St. Anthony's of the world? Because I mean, they're a private school and won 1A back in 2017? By the way, them and Providence St. Mel in 2019 are the only non-public schools that have won a 1A state title since the split to 4 classes back in 2008.

Why don't we make it simple and just go back to the days when there were no classes of high schools. My Lyons Township High School (my older sister was a senior there) won the state championship with a 31-0 record in 1970. Their toughest game along the way was in the quarterfinals in Champaign. Effingham St Anthony nearly pulled off the upset, but my Lyons escaped with an 89-88 win. Our Coach, Ron Nikcevich, has forever stated that had we lost, he believed Effingham would have won the state title.

Is Effingham County really that big a hotbed of basketball talent though? And to be fair, if anyone was going to choose a school in that area based on the success of the basketball teams, Teutopolis would come before St. Anthony.
It's just my opinion. Even though they may not choose to get players from a farther distance doesn't change the fact that they have the ability to. Teutoplis does it with players from within the confines of their school district. St Anthony doesn't have a district. A multi class private school tournament would be fine with me.

And you don't think there are parents who wouldn't want their kids to go to Teutopolis if they had the opportunity and moved within that district because of the basketball success?

The one thing I never liked about high school basketball is your toughest game could be your regional championship based on your geography

I don’t think there is a way to seed the state tournament because of how big the state is but you should be able to balance the sectionals out a little

Also it would be nice if the state champs 1a-4a played against each other

It's better than how Indiana does it. In that state, you could have one subsectional (what they call regionals over there) that has a whole bunch of 20 win teams and another subsectional whose best team is maybe just over .500.

My son's golf team won the state tournament , public school. The players from most of the other schools were from private schools and were shocked to find out we were a public school, almost like we stole it from them. There needs to be a private school division

How is it possible in a 4 class system for a school such as Yorkville Christian (Jaden Schutt's team) to be a 1A school? Don't get me wrong, I understand that their enrollment is low enough to be 1A, but there is no way that Yorkville Christian and your local small town public school are working under the same set of rules.

Yorkville Christian only lost to St. Rita by 8 points 111-103 - the same St. Rita that Illinois has a verbal commit from and at least one other player that they are recruiting.
Yorkville Christian beat Kenwood by by 7 points 75 -68 - the same Kenwood that has Dai Dai Ames an Illinois recruit.

Yorkville Christian should not be competing in the IHSA class 1A state tournament! My understanding is that their is a multiplier that is used for private schools (who can recruit) to determine what IHSA class they compete in, but this just doesn't seem right. In the past, I always thought that no matter the enrollment, a private school had to bump up a class from where their enrollment placed them. This system seems broke.

I feel bad for all those small school teams whose dreams will get crushed by a team that could probably compete for the Class 3A State Title, and probably should at least be playing in Class 2A.
