I just looked at their schedule. They are now 3-2 with two losses to Wake Forest (ranked #6) and now are playing Southern Mississippi (ranked #18.) Two more games with them, and those are the ONLY currently ranked teams on their schedule.
Not sure how they'll do this year (their losses to Wake were BAD) but yesterday's result was an encouragement. Southern Miss has had great teams in the past, with numerous major league all-stars.

They are in a real barn burner tonight. Bottom of the 10th and we are up by one run.

Lost 14-13 in 11 innings. We used 10 pitchers who collectively hit 5 batters, threw 5 wild pitches and walked 13. The game took 5 hours and 17 minutes and was marred by multiple play reviews. At the end of the game Southern Miss. had bases loaded, one out and sent a line drive over the outfielders head which brought in the winning run. However, neither the runner on first or second base advanced to the next station. Illinois threw the ball to third and second base respectively and argued that constituted a double play thus negating the run that came in. He lost his appeal and we lost the game. Frankly, I don't know the rule there but Hartlieb argued that all runners are required to advance once the batter made it to first base.

If they got two force outs then the run shouldn't have counted. Regardless, team had multiple opportunities to win and the pitching staff let them down

for those in the know, anything to report regarding the baseball team?
I see they were 6-5 going in to today, and playing in Coastal Car in SC this weekend, and opening day in CU is this Tuesday.
where are we expected to be, in the B1G this year ? top 5 ?

Went to the game yesterday against Michigan State. It was a lot of fun. Good crowd, good weather, free admission. Won 14-7.
However . . . after 2 and a half hours, they were only in the sixth inning. Long drive home, so called it a day at that point.
Illini are 10-10 in the conference after yesterday.

Big 10 Tourney is looking likely. One more loss by Purdue this weekend and I believe it's a lock.

Tie-Breakers. Here's my take on how we get into the post-season tourney:

3-way tie:
#1 - We didn't play Purdue so I don't think head-to-head will/can be used.
#2 - We would be defeated using common opponents (IND, RUT, NW). Illini finished 3-6; MSU would be 7-2; Boilers would be 4-5). I'm assuming this is the one and only calculation being used. (However, I would hope that this tie-breaker simply determines which team is awarded 7th place....MSU. If we're fortunate, the league would then use the 2-way tie breaker between Purdue and Illinois and award us 8th.)

2-way tie (Purdue):
#1 - We did not play head-to-head
#2 - Common opponents are IND, MSU, RUT, NEB, MIN and NW. Our record is 10-8. Purdue's record would be 9-9. We win!!

2-way tie (Michigan State):
#1 - We won head-to-head 3-0!!!


So it would appear we get knocked-out in a 3-way tie, but we beat both Purdue and MSU in a 2-way tie. Let's just hope that Purdue loses one more regular season game and we're in!

Update:

Looks like Michigan State is now in, having reached 12 wins. They'll either end up with 13 and sole possession of 7th place, or win tie-breakers with 12 wins.

So it's now down to either Purdue or Illinois for the final spot in the playoffs:

A) MSU wins; Purdue loses --- Illini get 8th spot by virtue of our 12 wins v Purdue's 11
B) MSU loses; Purdue loses --- Illini get 8th spot by virtue of our 12 wins v Purdue's 11
C) MSU wins; Purdue wins --- Illini get 8th spot by virtue of our 2-way tiebreaker over Purdue (see above)
D) MSU loses; Purdue wins --- All three teams end up 12-12 in the conference and we lose the 3-way tiebreaker (see above)

Again, it's still possible in scenario #D that once MSU is awarded 7th place, the tie-break rules will default to Purdue vs Illinois in a head-to-head and we still get in. This is not yet clear to me. We need a Purdue loss today to be certain!!

BREAKING: THE "BIG SHOW" JUST INDICATED THAT WE'RE NOW OFFICIALLY IN THE TOURNAMENT!!!! I GUESS MY BOLDED TEXT ABOVE MUST BE HOW THE TIE-BREAKER WORKS!!!!

Thank you for the update! Baseball was easily "my sport" growing up, and I am able to watch/enjoy it with a much better understanding for the game itself than I ever am while watching football or basketball. I have longed for the day where Illinois Baseball is good enough to be playing in big-time games in May and June again, as I would get to combine two of my greatest sports loves in this world! 2015 was an absolute blast, and it sucked to go out early at home, even if it was to the most worthy of opponents.

Just turned on Illinois-Michigan. The lousiest, stinkingest Illini baseball uniforms of all time. I've had it. What crap. How can I be an Illini fan when I don't even recognize the unis? No way. Turn off, which I did the game.
