Stress fractures are the most difficult to predict especially in the leg. I don't expect JCL to be 100% game ready in exactly 8 weeks but I doubt he'll be far from it. Let's not forget that Kendrick Nunn returned well before his estimated date. FWIW, I've seen plenty of hand specialists after having a couple of surgeries on my wrist, and I feel pretty confident about him returning in the 8 weeks (+/- a week or two).
Nunn's injury was to his thumb on his non-shooting hand. Probably hard to compare the two.

Really? I could have sworn I saw him taking shots against UAB or Iowa State with his slightly wrapped left hand. Hmm.

I don't think Newman was totally writing him off, but I'm also not all that worried about AJ. Spot minutes last year & typical freshman woes can definitely make a plus shooter appear average. Wouldn't look too hard into that scrimmage, either. I have a hard time believing he won't be a vastly improved defender. Those gains are no joke.

I think AJ's shooting is there and it seems to me he is tight, forcing his shot a bit. He is very smooth and needs to relax that shot. When shaking hands with him for a 3rd year in a row I noticed a real big difference between last year and the present. Sometimes when bulking up you lose a bit of your touch as it tries to catch up with the muscle build up.

I expect to see a big difference in all of this soph class during the year as they turn the corner from their frosh year.

Those gains definitely give me hope for AJ. He works damn hard, that's for sure and I hope that translates to more success. I think it's more mental than skill deficiency at this point.

True, all the more reason to look at the JCL hand injury as glass half-full. AJ deserves the chance to show some consistency & a little confidence with him should go a long way.

Agreed. I have seen Jordan shoot the ball very well in the past. As a true freshman, he shot the ball a little flat and seemed to rush his shot. That can be typical for a freshman, especially when you come off the bench and you don't want to make any mistakes. Can tighten you up.

I thought he still looked a bit tight on his shot on Saturday. I know the touch is there and, hopefully, we will see a relaxed Jordan shooting the ball this season.

Your observations concern me a bit. If AJ is "tight" during a practice or a pick up game, I don't have a lot of confidence that he will be "relaxed" while shooting in an actual game.

I would agree. However, it was just one scrimmage and he reportedly shot the ball well on his Euro tour. I guess I expect him to be a lights out shooter and he didn't shoot it well on Saturday. But he may be kicking butt every other day. Who knows?

And, he may not have been tight. That was me speculating. He could have just had a bad day.

I remember when Alex Legion tore a scrimmage up.

It's nice to get a first hand view of these kids but there's a limit what you can conclude from them.

Out of one scrimmage or the fact AJ just had a very successful trip in Europe where he averaged over double digit points I'd probably focus on the trip to Europe but to each their own.

I know the trip was discussed previously but does anyone know the quality of competition and his team's roster? Did it have any other power 5 players?

I'm guessing you were replying to me. I did say it was only one scrimmage and I did mention the Euro trip.

I just reported what I saw at the scrimmage. Probably focused too much on Jordan's shooting because I expect him to be a good shooter. I said that I have seen him shoot it very well, too. I wouldn't even mention Austin's shooting, for example, because I don't expect as much from him. Part of being a good shooter and being someone that the team counts on is that you will be critiqued good and bad. I am a big fan of Jordan's. You don't travel from Champaign to Plainfield to watch him play unless you are pulling for the kid. :)

It wasn't directed towards anybody specific Combes... just trying to keep perspective. Certainly appreciate the thorough report.

Well shooting has been the problem for Jordan even if you say it shouldn't be. I expect him to do better but he needs to be so much more consistent than what he's shown in the past and in the scrimmage over the weekend. I have hope that he can get there but JCL is the guy we need at the 2 for Illinois to be successful this year. I expect Abrams or Austin at the 2 if JCL needs more time.

Did you guys forget about DJW? If JCL does miss some games, then at least 1 of AJ or DJW will be able to step up. If Austin plays ahead of both of those guys then we might need to find a new coach.

Isn't this what a lot of folks are talking about already ? ?

Oh... my bad.... I see what you did there...

Athlons was 11th in the BIG10, now Lindys at 8th.
Both seem reasonable. As a homer, that looks terrible!! It would say we're not likely to make that dance even with a healthy roster, which none of us believe.

We have a lot to prove.

Then we prove it. If I was a prognosticator, I would rank us low, too. But I know we have the talent to compete. Just have to do it this year.

One mistake does not define Illini's Black

The university works with my school and brings athletes in to work with or talk to our kids throughout the year. Leron started working with the kids, fell in love with them and couldn’t get enough," Meyers said. "I don’t condone what he (Black) did.

"I’ve met a lot of athletes over the years, but none like him. He was required to do his 25 hours and did them rather quickly, then Leron just kept coming back. At one time we totaled his hours -- he was at 175. He would contact me frequently and ask to come visit the kids even when he was done if he didn’t have class or study hall.”

“Leron knew he messed up; he would be the first to tell you he was going to right his wrong. I remember a conversation where he flat out told me he has strong faith and would make it through this, but felt awful for what he put his family and teammates through,” Meyers said.
