Mark Alstork Brings Scoring and Experience to Illinois Basketball

Many Illinois fans have been eager to know when Alstork will join his teammates and start working out with coaches and players. I think Illini fans will be happy with the answer.

“I am actually finishing up this week and will graduate on Friday,” Alstork said. “I am excited to join my teammates. I have been anxious to start leading and getting to know the guys so we can gel and get this thing going. I will for sure be in Champaign in less than two weeks. I want to leave this weekend but have to make sure I have everything transferred over in an appropriate manner.”

If that story doesn't clear whether Alstork will be starting or not, I don't know what will. He'll be a starter from day one.

Since we are throwing it out there... here is my best guess for the starters during week 1 of conference play.

TJL
Smith
Alstork
Kipper
Finke

Very confident on the first 3. I'm guessing some combination of Kipper/Black/Finke in the last two spots, and could vary based on matching up against the team they are playing.

Wow what a coincidence publishing that while we all discuss whether he starts or not.

Would love to see TJL Smith, Alstork, Nichols, Black out there.

This is my #2 lineup and what i believe our starters will be, if AJ doesn't break out this yesr like I believe he will.

And for all those Alstork doubters out there, if you followed him on Snapchat during his visit here, you would know the answer to weather he starts or not! And don't say 'it's just a recruiting pitch' because this staff don't play that! Besides, Alstork is a senior, not an incoming freshman, a senior who in some minds was the number 1 transfer player on the market :chief:

This has been an extremely long off season.:D

Sure has and we have a long way to go yet. The anticipation of seeing a team that moves on offense and a no-BS coach running the show is making the wait both tortuous and full of hope at the same time.

So because he said he will be in Champaign in two weeks makes him a guaranteed starter....

I'll be there in a week can I start as well....smh

Read the article. Highly sought-after graduate transfers who put up the kinds of numbers Alstork did last season do not ride the bench.

With Alstork lets not forget that BU was selling him on being able to score 20 a game. That doesn't sound like a guy who the coach is going to bring off the bench.

I think Alstork will start because he's our only experienced college scorer. Still, the key word in your post is "selling". No-one is recruited with a promise to sit on the bench.

I am going to stay off the high horse in regards to Alstork. It is going to be a different type of game for him coming to a Power5. I wouldn't be soo quick to give him a starting spot or the "go to guy". I thought I read something awhile back (maybe his junior year) about team chemistry. Could be a problem coming in late to the team who have been with each other for awhile now??? Maybe I am crazy????

It would be hard to say Alstork won`t start, he was told he would be a leader when recruited, they don`t sit on bench. Now there may be a transition period where he is not given as many minutes, but again I find him on court as long as he is productive. BU said from the get go, " You earn your playing time" , I`d guess that means all. Very anxious for him to join the rest of squad, see how they all mesh. Step up and get your season tickets now! :thumb::illinois:

It may be a challenge since he had only 3 games against P5 quality opponents over the last 2 seasons. In 2015/16 against Kentucky 9p 4rb and Xavier 3p 6rb. And last season against Penn St 15p 5rb 3-18fg.

You guys are lining this team up like last year's. Vividly! But it's a new system and a new coach.

& just because coach raves about a player doesn't mean he'll start. He's an upperclassmen and a significant part of the team. Doesn't mean he'll start tho. The players that most efficitevtly and aggressively run this system will play.

Bubbles, I respect you and combes as posters. But like many on here, I believe we will be surprised how this man plays this team and runs this line-up. I could be wrong tho, and this is a very good and healthy debate to have! :illinois:

Smartest thing I have read on here all summer.....I have been to practice and open gym and let me tell u....Most of you guys are wayyyy out in left field!:D

So out in left field.....played there a lot....is it the curve you want us to hit? I think he will play the best we got and ones that want to play, hoping that`s close to right. Condition, defense and desire are the factors.;):illinois:

I have always wondered ... with all the talk re: Alstork & Matic being behind etc. Does anyone know to what extent staff and/or other team members use technology to keep them in the loop - would have been easy to film the daily team skill drills (or send agenda) which Alstork with his 3-a-day work outs could then work on (and tape himself to get feedback). DItto for Matic. Or follow a plan with Fletch re: diet and weights, etc. No its not the same as being with team, but its in line with Alstorks comment 'work smarter' - like we heard earlier about BU working their weaknesses, eg, TJ finishing left.
Just like I assume they are all watching film on spread, etc ...

Coach Underwood doesn't view it like most on here. He doesn't have a starting 5 he has 10 or 11 guys who will play in the game and he expects them to all be ready to play at a high level. He sells his guys with that mindset and if they cant play at that level then they don't play. He will prove himself to be the best coach the Illini have ever had. He will be an elite level coach. He has that "IT" factor. He demands a lot from his players and is very vocal about it in practice, VOCAL. Its not for every guy and we will lose some guys because they cant handle his approach but he will also take some kid that everyone doubts taking and turn him into all conf. I cant wait!!

I can tell you matter of factly, all this and more is being done to prepare the remaining incoming players, Matic and Big Mike

Underwood started the same 5 guys for 34 straight games in his first year at SFA.:)
