I like Groce too and he did a great job his first recruiting class, landing 3 solid Big Ten players (Nunn, Hill, Mav) and two project players. But he had too many misses (No PG, No 5 star), Character Misses (Crosby, Paul), and Talent Misses (DJ). He recruited players with good rankings but major flaws in their game. DJ had no motor and lacked many bb skills, although long. Coleman-Lands could shoot but couldn't handle the ball and was a major liability on defense. Two best recruits following Hill/Nunn were Kipper and TJL. The 3 year gap is was ended his Illini tenure. Also skill development wasn't on par with other programs, Groce asst. Coaches also help end his tenure.

This couldn't be further from the truth. He had pretty much every basketball skill need. He could handle it with both hands, finish with both hands, and had 3-pt range. Yes, Groce recruited players with flaws. But most college players have flaws. A good coach works to his players strengths and tries to avoid their weaknesses.

If this has been answered then I apologize (again) but is there a reason why we our playing Northwestern on December 1 and Maryland on December 3? That's way before the usual conference schedule.

MSG is booked for normal B1G tournament time because of BIG East having it at that time. B1G had to move tournament up 1 week so B1G regular season schedule came forward for first week early in December. With B1G moving to 20 games in 2018, the early December will be the norm. Speaking of NW, tickets for NW/UI game on December 1 at All State arena are on sale at NW website. Not a lot of seats left. Could easily be an 18,000 +sellout.

SEC gave first and second team all conference projections that included four freshman. Believe we have freshmen that will make a difference and should not have to wait two years down the road. Biggest weakness is no depth at the bigs.
Not top ten talent but should be upper half of BIG.

Illinois coach Brad Underwood asked, on a scale of 1 to 10, what his goal for the offense is this year: "Nine-plus."
https://twitter.com/_Brian_Hamilton/status/921022197006848001

Underwood: "I've been very, very excited at Illinois at this point in terms of our fans and passion." Excited to fill SFC

Underwood: "I'm excited about this group." Challenge is we're inexperienced, everyone playing new roles.

Underwood: Te'Jon Lucas "is my type of point guard. He's a pitbull." Good defender, growing as leader

Underwood said yesterday was Lucas' first full day back from concussion.

Underwood: Group has committed to the system and the culture.

Underwood: Mark Smith "is very special." Physically looks the part of a 21-, 22-year-old guy.

"It's unfair me to compare him, but I do compare him to Jason Kidd back in the day. He has that type of athleticism."

Underwood: "We've got guys who can offensive rebound." Got to foul line a lot at OSU and shot 80 percent as team. That helps.

Underwood: "I think we can be a team that's pretty proficient on the offensive end."

Underwood: Black and Finke are two quality interior guys we didn't have at OSU last year. Both capable of big games.

I thought it was good but I also thought there were definite hints that this year will be a work in progress. Not a surprise to most realists but there are plenty on here that do not fit in that category. Sounds like we should temper expectations.

What was up with that stink face that he had early on in the Q&A? Either breakfast didn't sit well or the guy next to him cut a mean one... LOL

I loved his answer about why they switched defenses in the middle of the season at OSU last year. The guy knows his Xs and Os. And loved how he said that he had to help his players out and gain them some confidence.

BU said, "Got to foul line a lot at OSU and shot 80 percent as team.". Seems like this is an emphasis this year, too. But last year's Illinois team was not very good at the line, if I remember correctly. Anyone conjecture on how good a free throw shooting team we are this year?

I noticed a similar vibe as well. But he also answered he expects our offense to be a 9+ when compared to the 10 of what Oklahoma State was last year. Probably be flashes of brilliance combined with some learning curves and inconsistency. Either way, I'm convinced he's definitely the man for the job and we are going to win.

Alstork can put it down from the line very consistently

I'm okay with 9+ out of ten if a 10 is last year's OSU. I think we may be at that 10 level by the end of the year because we should be a more balanced team. He may have tried to temper expectations slightly perhaps because he knows these guys are young and there will be growing pains, but he will be the kind of coach who will demand perfection which should allow his teams to at least achieve greatness while trying. We'll see.

Wouldn't that mean we have the best offense in the country? I think that's probably not going to happen.

I think we'll have a really good offense though.
