He's right though. Ayo made it his personal mission to stand out as a defender to make the U18 national team. It is pretty likely that will carry over into his time as an Illini.

'pretty likely' isn't fact so no, he isn't right. It's a prediction, and pretty close to the trunk of the tree so maybe it will happen. But to consider it a foregone conclusion that Ayo will be our best new defender is merely an educated guess at this point in time.

That would be 3 BTT wins, which for a .500 conference team puts them in the Championship game. That's aggressive.
Actually, if you are one of the bottom 4 teams in conference standings (which I'm assuming we would be just barely, maybe 10th in conference?), then you have to play the first round and thus winning 3 games would get you to the semifinals.

A .500 team isn't going to be in the bottom 4, hence why I said "for a .500 conference team" which was the original prediction in the thread.

I thought hard about Griffin (Tom Crean voice)... and I do think he could have many and will have some bright spots. I just see these other guys being more consistent throughout the season given their natural athletic abilities.

Sounds to me like you might be undervaluing Griffin's talents much like numerous recruiters did to their detriment, before his fantastic run late in this past season, but time will no doubt tell.

You just can't beat arguing in July whether we will actually have 19 or only 18 wins for the season. Of course I'm sitting here reading it! :D

Right or wrong, I see Griffin as an AJ type of player. Hard worker. Not ultra athletic, but a great teammate and someone who will be a solid contributor and a strong 3 point threat.

I was basing off my own prediction of 7 conference wins.

Again this is me only speaking about their freshman year. I hope he proves me all sorts of wrong.

I am still impressed by the ten rebound per game average. Compare him more to DaMonte in that he is the smooth deceptive athlete rather than the high flyer. Minutes will be determined by his defensive ability rather than offense and the rebounds are a indication of that capability.

I agree with GA65, Griffin is a better rebounder than AJ from his HS stats. His dad was a good defender, so that makes me guess he'll be better than AJ there as well.

1.8 blks, 2.4 steals and 10 Rebounds per game as a senior is good indicator that he has potential to be a good defender. I like 42% 3p and his BB IQ too. Regardless of where he stands in the rotation as a Freshman, he has potential to be a really good player for us and we are fortunate to have AG on our Roster!

You guys are absolutely hilarious sometimes...(guess thats what this site is for) lol AJ was the fouth leading rebounder on the team last year (thats in the B1G) and you guys are comparing a Freshman's highschool stats....you cant even make this !!!! up. Too funny! Coach has a complicated defensive scheme and it will take time for the ANY freshman in the B1G to learn it. Thank God for upper class-men because we are going to need each and everyone of them. Anyway...you may continue LMAO!

I see some Evan Turner in Alan Griffins game. Turner exploded his senior year in high school as well.

I could see him being solid contributor but not next season. He'll get several minutes a game if he's lucky.

Trent did okay last year. I think it's possible a couple of the freshmen catch on quicker than last year. They will at least have 4 bodies than ran it last year so its not new to the whole team. A great teammate like AJ, DaMonte or Trent will help these guys catch on. Gotta love you Chicago guys optimism around here. :illinois:

Does this post qualify as Loyalty after dark, or Loyalty before sunrise?

Seriously though, comparing a Freshman's HS rebounding stats to one of our Senior leaders is kind of a joke. Not only are Freshmen 9/10 underdeveloped compared to a four year college athlete, but like Mr. Jordan says, the defense is complicated, and that adds a whole other level to it. Since we're talking about Aaron, he shot 54% from the 3 as a senior in HS and got 5 rpg and then as a Freshmen shot 34% from the 3 and got 0.9rpg averaging 11mpg. HS stats don't translate to Freshmen stats and certainly isn't an indicator of an incoming Freshmen being better than a Senior. Unless the comparison is that Aaron had worse defensive stats as an incoming Freshmen than Griffen. That also doesn't make any sense since the leagues are entirely different, roles are different, and high school stats are really no indication of actual ability in college. It's such a transition. Morgan had killer stats but a rough transition. Ended up being a great center for us, but it takes time.

Idk though, Mr. Jordan, how are your rebounding skills? Apparently the real indicator of success is the father's skill. ;) ;) Let us know how the 1v1 vs Griffen's dad goes.

This is some groundhog day stuff. I guess I should say something to begin with: There literally isn't anything else to discuss so I'm not against it.

But, these kind of topics are always something brought up. The shiny new freshman, most of whom dominate against lesser HS talent, are touted as day one guys who will instantly impact a team of returning players (this year somehow being no exception despite only having four returners.) For every Trent Frazier, there are 10 Mark Smith's. And I say that not against MS, but against stud HS players who struggle their freshman year.

Sometimes, this kind of talk is somewhat merited, i.e. Ayo should have a great year, he's been able to perform at the highest levels available to him consistently. Again, always an argument against this kind of thought (Jereme Richmond?). TBH recruiting takes a lot of skill and gut feelings to get it right, but take all that away and there is a nontrivial amount of sheer luck and unquantifiable attributes that a player has to have to be able to succeed in college (even more so their first year).

Underwood has chosen (whether or not the fall misses mean anything is another discussion) to go after proven winners and hope players will be scrappy enough to hide other weaknesses.
