I think they mean when he considered looking elsewhere after Groce was fired.

That's my guy this year. I am pushing my chips in.
I too have very high expectations for DW. Liked his game last year, expect a fully recovered knee and another year of experience to be absolutely huge.

If his fully healed knee means he becomes an even better defender, he will start at some point this year. He was already our best rebounding and defending guard last year. He's got enough length to at least challenge some 3's. It might not be this year that he makes a giant leap, but he's a great player. if he can flash his fathers distributor abilities, it's going to be incredibly hard to keep him off the floor.

While I generally don't think they should be a top 10 team, they've proven more than once in the past that they are indeed just that. They are definitely a top 10 team this year, will probably go into our match up ranked around 5 (I've seen some ranked them preseason 2nd). Only losing one out of their top 5 scorers.

I really want to see one of our guards, preferably DaMonte check Norvell.....big surprise gonna happen on that..Zach will be hard pressed to get 10 that game. Damonte on the other hand will outscore him, out rebound him and out assist him. Heard it here!

He was listed as a PG coming out of HS ( At least on VC). Did not see him utilized that way last year i.e. Bringing up the ball or starting the offense. Does he have the handles and passing skills to function as one? Was curious because we brought Feliz in as a backup. Hopefully the time he has spent with AJ in the early mornings will make him a three pt threat. Haven't seen wing span nos on him but he certainly seemed to play bigger than he is listed even playing on a recovering knee. Would love to see him guarding the opposing PG.

Our best rebounding guards were Kipper, Alstork, AJ, then DW. (Look at the stats) Our best defender/rebounder would have been Alstork based on stats.

It's been a great summer, all guys have worked on their deficiencies and have shown improvements across the board.

Fletch is a Beast!! Best in the business. AJ couldn't squat the Bar his freshman year!

I enjoy your posts. AJ seems like a great kid. Win, lose or draw, enjoy the heck out of his senior season......not many get to do it.

Kipper is not really a guard, but stats should also be standardized for minutes played. If one looks at rebounds per minute or rebounds per 40 mins, then DW was indeed the best rebounding guard last year:

1. DW at 6.8 rbs/40mins
2. AJ at 6.1 rbs/40 mins
3. Alstork at 6.0 rbs/40 mins

DW also led the guards in total rebounds per game in conference and rebounds per 40 mins in conference play:

1. DW at 7.6 rbs/40mins
2. AJ at 4.8 rbs/40 mins
3. Alstork at 4.8 rbs/40 mins

So let me get this straight....I shot 1 over yesterday on a 9 hole course in Lagrange (Flagg Creek). That means I can say I shot 2 over for 18? And here I am thinking I was a 12 handicap. Thanks for clearing that up for me. My handicap is now +2! You guys crack me up!! Kipper is not a guard?! Somebody better tell him that!

A few differences. In most individual sports, like golf, players play the same number of holes in the same tournament (whether that 9-hole course, 18-hole course or whatever), whereas in team sports, minutes are differently distributed in the same game. Also, we are not talking about practice, or one game, but rather on official competition over the course of the season. So if you indeed can shoot 1 over in 9-hole competition over the course of a year, you may be getting somewhere. :)

For the record, DW in addition to being the best rebounding guard last year as far as rebounds per minute (or per 40 mins) for the entire season, he was also the best rebounding guard even as straight average in B1G conference play, an indication that his injury (or freshman jitters) may have been a factor earlier in the season. Furthermore, DW did not just play in the first half, his minutes were distributed throughout the game, so if your golf average is consistently much better in the first nine, it may be an indication that you are getting tired. ;)

As far as Kipper: you, Kipper, or someone... better please tell BU and the coaching staff at UI because they are not really playing him at guard so far in his career.

Let's all hope that all returning player significantly improve, but let's also hope that freshmen really surprise everyone, because otherwise it could be a long season. :illinois:

Just finished 18 at Cinder Ridge and I was a long way off from 2 over (more like +12) so I guess your theory doesnt work with golf. Actually, no stats organization looks at Rebounds they way you have described ( Rbs/per 40 min) So back to my original point. I guess we should look at all stats at per 40 min/game. lol

Lots of nice courses on Maui as well -- you should definitely bring your sticks (or at least your golf shoes and rent some clubs) and get out for a few rounds. . . And while the trees there are a bit skinnier, they seem to be just as easy for me to hit.

Enjoy your son's senior year.

What is our realistic Maui record?

I can see us beating Gonzaga if they have an incredibly off night; otherwise, I think we will head to the loser's bracket since they are both more experienced and more talented than us.

If our second game is Iowa State (which was a lower end big 12 team last year, but is expected to improve to a middling big 12 team this year) I think that game could end up being a key to any NCAA tourney hopes we might have, since we will at our very best be on the bubble, and the big 12 seems to benefit from being constantly overrated as a conference during the regular season. It would be a good win, and I think we can take them (despite their strong starting guard play and experienced front court length) in what would be a "hangover game" situation after what would be an unexpected loss to Arizona. Although Arizona would also be a good win for us (since I think they eventually find their way towards the top 3rd of a perennially weak PAC-10, like us, they lost a lot of pieces from last years team and have replaced with a combination of grad transfers and incoming recruits (3 4-star recruits)) -- I just have no idea how these pieces fit together on the floor (or the mood around the team in general given what is going on with the FBI issue). I can't even hazard a guess what that game looks like.

Win or lose the second game, the third game we are likely either playing Xavier or San Diego State. I like our chances against Xavier (lost their top 3 scorers from last year, but return at least 3 more who averaged > 7 points a game, and added some transfers) who if we get lucky is questioning their new coach by that time, a little better than San Diego State (who has an exceptionally talented frontcourt against who we don't seem to match up very well). Having said that, I don't think we match up particularly well against either.

I'm thinking 1-2 or 0-3. The only team with more question marks than us at this point is Arizona, and given we will likely have a steep frontcourt learning curve. Anything better than that would be a significant accomplishment. The good news is that nobody in the field should represent a bad loss by year's end.

I almost want to lose to Gonzaga so we take take it to ISU and demonstrate to all of their recruits we lost to them that they picked the wrong school.

Almost.
