Ayo- Much stronger than last year. Looked smooth and effortless. Feel like he could take over anytime he wants. But obviously restrained and trying to get everyone on the team better. Everyone in Ubben held breath for about 3-4 minutes when he went down. Griffin with a hard foul on Ayo to the rim.
Feliz-Andre was my favorite player last year and that has not changed. Many have said he is second best player on team and I would have to agree. Does so many things well and is shooting it better. Just has that knack for right play. For example on a drive to the basket from right side, Kofi was trailing defensively and if Feliz would have went up for a right hand layup Kofi would have blocked it. I am not even sure Feliz saw Kofi behind him but he had presents of mind to go up on left side and let rim help out.
Frazier-Loved what I saw out of Trent. I thought he looked better than he did last year. He has really accepted his role and looks a step faster (ankle last year?). He did everything right offensively and defensively. As a spot up three guy he is automatic. Nice to get two more years out of him.
Jones-Hit everything in warm ups. Didn't have that many opportunities in scrimmage. Running the floor and getting to rim he looked great. Average on defense at best. I think he has made a little jump that you like to see but not as much as Griffin has. Inconstant like our man Kip. Will be interesting how this year goes for him. I could see him go either way.
Griffin-Kid is everywhere. Was money in shoot around. Not so much in scrimmage situations. I didn't see anything wrong with his shots other than they didnt go in. Put down a slam on Ayo that was awesome. Defensively he is a bother much like Damonte with his length.
Kipper-Saw mainly good Kipper with a couple of bad Kipper bonehead decisions. But I do think he is getting after it more on defense. Same old story. Get good Kip and he will be an asset.
Damonte-Same Damonte as last year. Not really much to say other than he can be an asset in a limited role. Still cannot shoot. Watching shoot around he still likes to flick the ball sometimes.
GB=Looks leaner and more cut than last year. Definitely moves even better than he did last year which was great. Didn't see much offensively but like Ayo is really helping get teammates involved. Another reason is when Kofi is guarding him you can definitely tell his size bothers him. Much like Garza and Haarms did to him. Will be interesting to see how he plays with and without Kofi.
Kofi-Kid dunks everything anytime he can. Saw it when they scrimmaged and in drills. Has a nice touch and runs floor great. I think he will have games he struggles just because he is a freshman. But will be a beast. I did see him get frustrated a few times for various reasons. But again a lot of it because he is a freshman.
Hamlin-Much better than I anticipated and much better than I saw his senior year at Lincoln. Runs floor well. Has nice touch and very athletic. Plus he didn't back down from anyone including Kofi. I originally thought he would redshirt but he will help in some spot minutes. Future is bright.
Grandison-Really liked what I saw from him. Runs floor, great length, gets to the rim. Decent defense. Shot well in shoot around. Didn't show that or really have opportunity in scrimmage situations. He will help following two years. Plus helping being on scout team this year.
Hutcherson-Another kid who runs the floor and has nice length. Nice shot. Thought he got lost on a few things. You add that strength and year in offense and Underwood looks like genius getting him and Grandison. Those two will be better than most incoming freshman would have been next season.

Overall I really liked what I saw. No brainer that they will be better than last year. And how much of a jump? I like what most experts have said. That 5-7 range in Big Ten, make tourney and maybe win a game or two. But their ceiling is higher. They get everything going and clicking early enough than shoot a few spots higher in Big Ten. Another big plus is Gentry. Guy might be second best basketball mind in the building arguably behind Underwood. Love his instruction and you can tell players are tuned into him already. Could seriously be worth a few wins. I don't like how it happened but wow what an addition. Also I realize we will lose a lot with Ayo, Feliz and Kipper after this year, but you bring in Miller, Curbelo or Robinson, Hawkins, maybe one more with who we will have coming back that team will be much better than most think.
Really good to hear about Hamlin, Grandison, and Hutcherson (y)

Thanks for the info. Do you have a feeling about the starting lineup aside from the obvious? Most notably the 3. Do you think Griffin might start?
Just depends what they want coming off the bench. Feliz, ayo, frazier, kofi and GB were best lineup he threw on floor. But he still may want feliz coming off the bench. But he is making it difficult to not start him. Too good. My guess is our friend damonte starts early or imo it should be griffin.

So much said about Tevian's athleticism, are we underestimating Alan's? He certainly seems very quick and difficult to stop.
I consider Griffin the most athletic player on the team. He’s really long and should get a lot of steals. If he could get a little of what Ayo, Dre and Trent have... great instincts and feel.

The flip side is you gotta compete. Doubt he was trying to foul/hurt him. Just trying to not give up an easy basket. If he put it off the glass with authority he’d get praised for never giving up on the play and giving great defensive effort in practice vs our best offensive player. I get where you’re coming from though. Just remember there are 2 sides.
Plus, what good is he doing Ayo if he's just giving him an uncontested, straight line to the rim. Not exactly prepping him for the season.

I kinda hate the way these previews go, isolating on player performance. It's what everyone is hungry for, but I think it's as important that guys work as a unit. Given how important reads and decision-making are, I'm most interested in how we're collectively running the offense. Must...remain...patient....

Offense ran better with every different unit imo. Three guard unit with Kofi and GB looked best. But still not sure where GB finds his offense in it. The team can create a lot of different looks against other teams. Will come down to match ups. Up to Underwood to expose other teams weaknesses.

Team picture looks like roster heights are accurate. Kofi 7', Jermaine 6'10", Giorgi 6'9", Ben 6'8". One posting indicated Ben looked taller than Giorgi but doesn't appear so in picture. The fact they are all 235 or more will help rebounding and defense. Much different physical condition than Ebo, Kane and can compete physically in BIG. May not be as big a factor this year but a difference maker in the future if they can retain them.

I get that and understand - things can happen. I guess without seeing it its hard to tell if it was a good aggressive attempt or something reckless. I'd just like to start the season with our NBA PG in tow. You should never foul just to stop 2 pts in a situation like that at the rim, but normal contesting resulting in a foul is fine.

To answer another post - if Ayo already has straight line to the rim I hope to god we're not fouling him at the rim just to stop 2 points. No one is saying clear a path and let him score - geez people - lets not exaggerate a point just to make a comment.

In the past we have been overly optimistic, but this optimism is backed by Giorgi and Kofi. Along with a future NBA guard and proven player Trent.

Going to the next level will require the less proven players Griffin, Tevian, Verdonk to be solid.

Feliz and Kipper should be solid if not spectacular.

If Kipper is solid, that would be huge. I’ll believe it when I see it, but for his sake I hope it’s true. He’s a good kid by all accounts and it would be great to see him go out on a high note.

Boy I hope so, but reports out of Italy were not good. His 2018/Soph TRank was #41 in the B1G. Right there with Matthews, Pritzl, Roby and Duncan Robinson. If he can return to those levels, this team is top 4 B1G for sure. Last year he slid in to the 80's TRank. A dramatic drop.

I think it's Griff and TJ that get us there, with some Verdonk sprinkled in for good measure.

T-rank has us at #14 preseason. Has Mizzou at #11 FYI.

When does Kenpom usually release his rankings?

Last year I saved his pre-season rankings on 10/29. I might not have gotten them the very first day they were out, but they were out by 10/29

I am so ready for for some positive results from one of our major sports teams. I have seen these players get better over last season and we have made some key additions to go with a strong core of proven players. There are actually factual reasons to expect a more experienced team to have improved results with what is a good but certainly easier non conference schedule and that is even before the new recruits. I expect more from this team than most and it is a reasonable expectation.

This is where I’m at too. I have some friends who ask me about the Illini every year. After all this time it feels good to tell them that were gonna be good again.

At this point I think sweet 16 is our ceiling. But once you hit the tourney with matchups and crazy upsets, you never know.
