I was reflecting on Kofi after reading Jan recruiting thread and reading GForce comment about Coleman Hawkins.

GForce: "I'm not too worried. Kofi looked like he was wearing cement shoes in some of his highlights from last year. So I'm hoping/assuming Coleman can make a similar jump with a full pre-season of Fletch workouts, if not more since he's a lot more nimble than high-school Kofi."

In reflection of Kofi's season...my 1st reaction to GForce comment....was I thought Kofi looked like he had cement shoes in November...but not anymore.

FURTHER REFLECTION ON KOFI....I really think in Kofi this year we are watching one of the fastest and most incredible in-season development and improvement of a college player most of us have ever season. It really is remarkable. I think of where he was at in Nov and fast fwd just 75 days....it is just amazing!

Kofi is special. No doubt about it. Expecting anyone to have a similar trajectory is crazy imo.

Yeah, Kofi's been fantastic. I think it's a testament also to how coachable he is and how hard he's worked at getting better. I can't imagine what kind of sophomore leap he might make.
The things I like about Hawkins are his passing ability and his swagger, which fit nicely with what Underwood likes from his bigs, and the team culture.

Underwood's name just thrown out by FOX as National Coach of the Year candidate. Long way still to go, however.....
I was watching that post game show as well on Fox, and originally I thought no way. But the more I thought about it, “if”we win the B1G he deserves some votes

All alone in first place! I did not think Wisky would get it done.

Hard to believe the B10 season is only half over! We are entering the part of the season we thought would be easier and it’s turning out to be anything but that. I agree with Banana Shampoo it would take at least a sweet 16 appearance and maybe more for the National award. As of today, I think he leads for B10 COY. That could all change tomorrow. Lol

This is all true of course. Things may change but sports commentators and fans alike are always projecting outcomes and they are largely based on trajectory - like identifying Heisman contenders midseason. If BU continues to guide this team near its current trajectory you definitely have to say he is in the running. This is all the more impressive when you consider last year's record - and believe me.....they will! Happy to see BU getting some love.

Quick question hoping for a quick reply....on what date of this season did the Illini tie MSU for first place for the first time since Moses was a baby? (or so it seems)

have to think that if we continue to play at a level high enough to get BU B1G COTY that OA and maybe even SG get looks as potential head coaches this offseason. The turnaround (especially defensively) this season after his hiring, along with his impressive pedigree, will have ADs taking a longer look at SG than people like to think

As promised in a prior post ...

This week's observations are about toughness of remaining games ...

Scanning a team's row, it's easy to see their remaining games (the white cells), and noting that left-side games are against teams higher up in the standings, you can get a general sense of whose remaining games are the toughest.

For example, among the top 3 teams, Illinois has only 2 to play (both at home), while MSU and Maryland each have 3 (2 of which are on the road).

Iowa, on the other hand, only has 3 games remaining against the top 7 teams, though 2 of those are road games against us and MSU.

Wisconsin only has 1 remaining against the top 7 - a home game against Rutgers!

Back, despite the lack of popular demand ... updated through today's games. Until someone begs me to stop, I'll try to dump this here at the end of each weekend.

Yes, it's a lot to take in, but once you "get it", it's kinda interesting to look at; for example ...

Scan a team's row to see ...
  • results - Green is good (W). Bright green is better (@W). Pink is bad (@L). Bright red is worse (L).
  • games remaining (white cells with dates)
  • byes (grey cells)
Scan the columns from left to right for ...
  • the fluorescent green "@W" cells - i.e. road wins. Those further to the left are against teams higher up in the standings. You can see that most are clustered to the right, against the bottom teams in the league.
  • the bright red "L" cells - i.e. home losses. Notice that columns to the left tend to contain more bright red as the better teams tend to inflict more damage upon others. You can quickly spot that Illinois is the only column with 3, none of which are against the bottom 2 teams. You can also quickly spot that Michigan St. and Maryland each have a pair, and each of those pairs include Northwestern.

8. KOFI COCKBURN, Illinois
Key stats: 14.0 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 1.4 bpg | Last week: No. 6

The Fighting Illini's winning streak finally came to an end at seven this week, with Kofi Cockburn struggling to generate production against Iowa star Luka Garza. Still, Illinois may hold the upper hand in the Big Ten race moving forward with Maryland, Michigan State, Iowa and Indiana all set to come to Champaign before conference play closes. Cockburn -- the freshman Big Ten leader in points and rebounds -- will play a central role in helping them get off the mat and back into contention. It's a two-way tie for first in the league standings between Sparty and the Illini.

Don’t know where to put this but does anybody know who or how to gain access to Illinois basketball videos for promotional video creation purpose? I enjoy writing music for stuff like that and creating but don’t have access to the videos. Sorry Dan if this doesn’t belong here. I just really want to make a promotional video haha

Rutgers suspended indefinitely their 4th leading scorer, Jacob Young, for a DUI arrest Sunday night.
