According to Yum Ramos, president of the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation (Fbpur), those who had confirmed their participation for the first practice were Gary Brown, Iván Gandía, Alfonso Plummer, Isaiah Piñeiro, Emmy Andújar, Chris Ortiz, Gilberto Clavell, George Conditt IV, Jorge Bryan Díaz, José Rodríguez and Timajh Parker-Rivera.

The team will not have André Curbelo, who the University of Illinois did not give permission to play, or Jhivvan Jackson, who recovers from an injury and then goes to an NBA camp.

Not top 50 guys. Nevertheless, I think Payne will easily outproduce his numbers at Florida.

Huge loss for Puerto Rico with Curbelo, I don't quite get how Illinois has the right to dictate what he does outside of the University.

Seems like that’d be well within the terms of a 4-year scholarship. The school is investing in the kid, so the kid ought to have guidelines around what’s allowed and what isn’t. It may also be coaches discretion and he’s pretty critical to next year.

Could also be that the young man decided that focusing on his development and team development was more important and BU gave him the out.

Probably the smart decision. He will get way more exposure running a BIG team than on the national team. It's nice to play for your country but the goal is getting to the next level right now.

While maybe accurate, I dislike the optics of having the University tell him he can't play (if that's how it went down and it wasn't AC's way of coming up with a good excuse to get him off the hook).

I'd agree if we were paying him a salary, but if he wants to play I don't get how we can tell him he can't. It's his prerogative to worry about his future in the NBA or not.

If done correctly, we will never find out if the university gave him the out, so that he doesn't lose face with PR.

I don't think it's that serious. Schools say no to this kind of stuff all the time. Not an anomaly. I saw Alfonso Plummer is going to be participating? I wonder if they allowed him to or if him not being on campus yet allowed him to make his own decision

This can't be minimized, Plummer being able to go and Curbelo can't is not good. I don't think we know all the details but from the intiial eyeball it doesn't have a good PR look. The University needs to get out ahead of this one and NOW!

Agree. From what I understand Belo is a national hero in PR and Illini games are an event.
Us putting the kybosh on Belo playing is horrible from a PR perspective.

Calm down, this happens all the time. The Mavericks refused to let Dirk play several times if I remember correctly. They also allowed him to play too. Just depends. Luka is playing this year & he has a 4 year $200 million contract riding on it. AC can play in 2024 & every Olympics after.

Maybe they would let him play if they actually made the Olympics. Odds are poor that they would prevail over the other 6 teams, including Brazil & Canada etc.

One of those has been in Underwood's system for a year, and will be getting good guidance on his development. The other is a high school commit who I'd assume can benefit greatly from getting more games and experience.
