This can't be minimized, Plummer being able to go and Curbelo can't is not good. I don't think we know all the details but from the intiial eyeball it doesn't have a good PR look. The University needs to get out ahead of this one and NOW!
This.

In an alternate universe:

”Curbelo tears ACL in blowout loss, out 6-9 months“

this board:

”why did our coaches let him play? He was set to be our star this year!”

My guess is Plummer insisted on being able to participate as part of his agreement to transfer to Illinois. (Wild speculation has confirmed this theory)
That's certainly a reasonable speculation, or he decided to participate despite BU not wanting him too, as given he is a grad transfer he has few established ties/less to lose than AC does? (just a WAG)

Again, I dont think it is that big of a deal because we are talking about a play in event that they are not going to win. If they were definitely going to the Olympics I think it would be different. If by some miracle they would win, maybe it would be a different state of mind as far as allowing him to go.

While maybe accurate, I dislike the optics of having the University tell him he can't play (if that's how it went down and it wasn't AC's way of coming up with a good excuse to get him off the hook).
My logic of thinking is that if Plummer is allowed to play then wouldn't AC be able to also.. ? They're both committed and signed. So I'm thinking that it's AC's decision not to participate most likely imo.... but I agree that it's best if he doesn't!

Curbelo is fiercely proud of Puerto Rico and has been seen wearing the PR flag after numerous HS games. He played for numerous years on the PR national youth teams.

And we don't know if he wanted to play in this one, whether he has a slight injury, doesn't like the coach of the team, etc. No point in speculating and spreading rumors. The source could have translation issues, a misunderstanding of their info, a million different things.

Pressured or not, it’s the kid‘s choice. I think the reasonable assumption here is that Curbelo chose not to participate.

Yeah I would say the team is taking the hit for him because he doesn't want to disappoint the national Team but Belo is trying to be a lottery pick next summer

And let’s not forget that Ayo was allowed to play on Team USA the summer before his Frosh year as well. Certainly had as much to lose as Curbelo.

Who knew that Grandison has Finnish citizenship? Not me, lol. Pretty cool that he's on their national team and playing in Japan.
I had an inkling of the dual citizenship. I mean, the signs were there: he was often a strong Finnisher at the hole this past season.

And I'm proactive, as well: to save time on the rejoinders I'll do the work in advance:

You can be proud of your heritage and still want to make money at the next level. Him loving Puerto Rico doesn't mean it would override his risk assessment. The college basketball season is a better opportunity to showcase himself than one tournament, so it wouldn't be surprising if he wanted/needed cover to duck out this year.

I'm not big on Twitter/social media following our players. Has there been any rumblings of discontent on Curbelo's end? If not, I'd bet things are good as far as he's concerned.

Curbelo is going to have all-you-can-eat minutes this upcoming season. Maybe he realizes the right call is to focus on individual drills for now and keep the mileage low until team practices start.

Not to mention the fact that Curbelo has legitimate NBA potential, while guys like Grandison and Plummer will likely end up playing overseas if they choose to continue to pursue basketball. The international tournaments are a great way for JG & AP to the eyes of international league scouts on them. For those guys its an opportunity for exposure. For AC, it's simply an injury risk.
