Class Act:

“Coleman had planned to take other visits, including DePaul, “one Final Four participant” and three or four other high-major schools, according to Rodney. But Coleman, who visits his family in Chicago multiple times per year, told his father after the Illinois visit that "it can't be better than this" at any other school and that he wanted to cancel the visits so that he didn't waste anyone else's time — or anyone else's opportunity.

“He said, ‘Dad, why would I waste that visit? That’s one less visit for someone who’s praying to go to that school, and I’m taking it just to make a trip,’" Rodney said. "I said, ‘Damn, I got a great son, man. Mature as hell.’ Literally, he turned down major players.””

Nice article I hadn’t seen. Thanks. I love the character of the kids on this team.

So, the Illini Inquirer on Wed had this to say about Kofi: "He sold his Illinois gear on The Players Trunk — which now requires Illinois compliance to work with the NCAA to determine what impact that will have on Cockburn." What are the thoughts the NCAA will do? Force Kofi to sit-out a few games or something else?

Absolutely nothing. They don't want that kind of press right now. The NCAA is scrambling to keep what little hold they have left.

I don't think they lost the game on defense. I think the team got beat because the offense died every time the opponents double teamed the ball handler off of the high pick. We saw this multiple times during the season. Anyone who watched any ILL game tape would see it. (Even I noticed and posted about it before the game. I'm FAR from an expert.) IMO the coaches blundered on this one. The team had no answer, and they should have known it was coming.

(I'm a fan of what I have seen from BU so far. This one left me shaking my head.)

They lost the game because of zero weakside help with size on defense to challenge shots or help on the glass and because on offense they could sag off Kofi and switch everything because we ran 4 guards . When Krutwig beat Kofi there was nobody him and it was like playing the backyard against smaller kids and we everyone knew what was coming but just unable to stop it .

We have to get some more size on the floor to help Belo because its not gonna do him any good in the pick and roll is teams can simply switch everything all the time . Hawkins or Payne opens up the high post feed to Kofi as well as solid screening for Belo . The Key to beating them double teaming the ballhandler is to have that versatile big that can pass or take a dribble with the ball draw a defender and make that pass it didn't help that we really only had one player that could beat his man off the dribble and consistently get to the rim.

I expect Coach Underwood to use Hawkins who has shown nice form all the way out to three but also the ability to pass and is mobile and active on both ends. I also when I see Plummers game I think Coach will use him the way he used Phil Forte . It took 3 years building thats team around the strengths of Ayo and then Kofi and with Ayo gone it will shift towards Kofi and Belo

I am Coach Underwood, I have decided to do equal playing time this year so none of my players parents get upset with me, and everyone will be happy.
Mark "Treadmill" Smith's parents thank you Coach for finally coming around to see the light. Now there is no need for players to get in shape or getting yelled at as equal playing time for all.

I don’t think anyone other than this year ever worried about seniors transferring after the season and our seniors will definitely help our team get to where we want, but I see the need to get our frosh some minutes. I can see DMW possibly having a few minutes chipped off estimates.
Yea, but what I mean is if players are upset about playing time and that drives them to transfer that doesn't apply to seniors because they're college career is over after the season. I doubt Underwood worries about that. He has to win and will play the guys he feels give him the best chance to do that. BU seems resigned to the fact that people are going to leave all the time now so don't get mad and complain about it, just accept the new normal and act accordingly.

I must have missed this but..... is the one time no set transfer going forward from this year? Or was it a fix for Covid year only?

From this year forward, everyone gets a one time no-sit transfer. If they opt to transfer a second time, they either have to sit or petition for a waiver.

I was on the same flight into Willard as Hawkins and his dad when they came in for his OV in Sept 2019.

After a quick google search to make sure it was him, when he stepped off the plane I asked “Are you Coleman Hawkins?” He seemed sort of stunned and replied, “Yeah, I am!”

I then said “Welcome to Champaign! Can’t wait to see you in the Orange and Blue.” They walked off a bit dumbfounded that he hadn’t even stepped foot on the ground yet and already was being recognized. Rodney Hawkins just nodded with a big, proud smile.

Chin scooped them up in baggage claim and off they went. Glad staff was able to seal the deal that weekend...

Great story...Seagee "a recruiting force!"

Thank You for that story and giving a great first impression to CH of Illini Nation!

I wondered same. I pondered and puzzled. Then I realized it's a subtle allegory:

The dire loading dock and the solid, though weathered brick walls that have seen many a prairie winter come and go aside the Illinois Central rail lines intersecting the East Central Illinois horizon, represent #everydayguys as well as the spare, functional, gritty elegance of the program's foundation. We're blue collar, not blue blood.

The vertical electrical conduit and meter? Is it an external power source animating Kofi and this scene? Or vice versa? Clearly, my friends, the latter.

The airborne, gaseous fireballs represent the futile protestations of our opponents' fans, currently consumed in paroxysms of agony as they slowly realize the Illini are back to stay among the BT's élite. These also serve as a metaphor for Curbelo's evanescent, transcendent, and levitating creative genius.

The large window above Kofi represents the universe into which the program is inexorably expanding. The window at far right, with an irregular pattern of rectangular panes, evokes the elegance, flair, and joie de vivre of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods: the team is ushering in the vanguard of an artistic revolution on the court (see, above, Curbelo.)

The stacked tires are a puckish allusion to Fletch and his training regimen. They're grounded and yet enable one to step easily from the floor to the loading dock. Note the black steel axis, barely visible, around which they're arrayed. The flame emanating form the top of it represents the combustible nature of strength and conditioning, radiating from that source, yet incapable of melting that enduring steel axis, and in no danger whatsoever of creating a tire fire (I mean, this ain't Madison, amirite?).

The two pallets leaning on the walls on either side of Kofi are especially intriguing. The one to his right, solid and leaving no gaps between the planks, represents the seamless integrity of the squad now that Kofi has returned to the fold. The one to his left represents the early off-season: individuals and fans on a lesser squad might fall through those cracks. Kofi and his Illini mates, however, bestride it as a collective colossus, and we stand on their shoulders of greatness as they do so. The single, askew plank represents the transfers and AC losses, now a distant, inconsequential, nay amusing, memory.

The hulking mass in the right foreground is clearly a slumping Darth Vader, in the process of bowing and prostrating himself to King Cockburn. It represents our sworn conference enemies, shrinking and faltering before the majesty of the Illini.

Or it all might be a really lame, camp, pastiche of bad '80s metal hair band music videos.
Wow, this is exactly what I was thinking. Hopefully, we see some further exposition from Illini promotions in the coming months.

Two thumbs up!

My understanding was last year it was a COVID rule but they have since made it permanent, which is to say anyone can transfer once without a sit out year going forward.

Why do you feel Plummer will average closer to 30 or 25 minutes a game and who will he take those minutes from? Trent? AC? Grandison? DaMonte? please tell me just because he averaged 13 points a game at Utah you think he is one of Illinois top 3 in minutes a game. Even if he can beat out Trent at the 2, which I highly doubt Illinois will not run too much with a 3 small guard lineup...or just post a goofy gif rather than back up your guesswork.

Looking at some of what Coach Underwood has run in the past when I see Plummer I see Phil Forte . I can already see him using Belo like he used Juwan Evans .

When I look at Plummer

and then Phil Fort when Coach Underwood coached him

and its not a matter of just taking threes but look at the range . So I could easily see Coach wanting someone on the floor with Kofi and Belo that forces defenses to face guard him no matter where he is at. So I could easily see him playing a bunch of minutes because hes got a torch.

Yes. The NCAA finally put revenue sports athletes on the same footing (WRT transfers) as non-revenue sports athletes.

Underwood values experience and I think to start the season you are going to see the 5 players with the most experience in his system, Curbelo, Frazier, Williams, Grandison and Kofi. Moving into the season I feel that there will be some movement with the starting 5 and Williams will move to the bench and Hawkins will see more time at the 4. Williams will see plenty of minutes and will be in the game at the end whenever it's close. I can also see Frazier being the back up PG if Plummer is a better shooter. I can also see different starters depending on the matchups. Plummer, Hutch, Hawkins, Payne and others will be given the opportunity in the OOC games to show that they can be trusted to play defense and provide offense with in the system. Freshmen will play, but it will take them some time to learn the system and be a trusted defender. What the Loyola game showed Underwood is that other teams aren't going to crawl into the fetal position just because Illinois is on the floor.

All this talk about minutes is a waste of air. Injuries, fouls and improvement by players are unknowns at this time. Also, players that get a hot hand in a game will get more minutes. Depending on the matchups, I can see Curbelo, Frazier, and Plummer on the floor at the same time, just as I can see Kofi, Payne, Grandison, Williams, and Frazier being on the floor together. A lot of possible combinations that haven't been seen before.

I thought that If an athlete at Illinois is given a scholarship, it's guaranteed for the rest of the player's career.
Once he enters the portal he gives up your scholarship (although Edgar didn't have one). The university can give it back but they aren't obligated to do so.

Great story! I was at the football game that weekend and had to watch out for his golf cart driving along Green St.
