Yep, and Hawk didn’t play in every game and didn’t play big minutes and he stuck around. So no real way to tell. Hope none of them leave, but if the only factor is how many minutes this year than 1 or more will leave. But if they take into consideration amount of minutes that will be available next year and buy into the Illini family and experience then who knows.
1 or more have left every year Undie has been here. No reason to think it won't happen this year (and next year, etc.) It's the new normal.

We will see some small ball in certain matchups but I just think the days of starting Kofi and 4 guards are over barring injuries .

I know this reply does not belong in this thread, but I have sent a message to the Admin and have not received a response. How do you gain the ability to start a new thread

I had the ability, but for some reason it went away. Dan works in mysterious ways.

I figure Dan wants the forum organized a certain way to limit the ridiculous number of new threads posters would probably start. I might have started a thread on a day that he was sick of the disorganization, who knows? What I tend to do if I think a post should start a thread is post it in another thread saying the topic deserves a new thread in my opinion, and usually that's all it takes --Dan will move stuff around and create the thread.

So that's what I'd recommend you do if you want to start a discussion you don't think is already covered. Pick a thread and indicate as much. Sometimes other posters will join your request and that makes it easier for Dan to accommodate without the forum getting too messy.

Unfortunately that is a real possibility. I’m sure BU realizes that and will do what he can to get them minutes, but he likely also realizes this team has a real chance at national championship or at least real far in tourney. He’s not going to jeopardize that just to keep a frosh from transferring down the line.

In competitive games, I could easily see the breakdown of minutes something like this:

AC 35
TF. 32
Kofi. 28
Hutch. 25
Grandy. 20
DMW. 18
Plummer. 25
Payne. 15

That’s 198 of 200 minutes and doesn’t include Hawk. Blowouts and games against lesser opponents opens up minutes, and foul trouble may move minutes down to end of bench. But where do you see any real significant being found for the freshmen outside of the opportunities I’ve mentioned?
I see a few people that put firm belief in Hutch being a major contributor on a really good team and my question is....why? You have him down at 25 minutes per game. Has he played 25 minutes in a season for us yet?

I love BU. He has passion, he backs his guys, he's a great leader....I can go on and on on why we're fortunate to have him as a head coach. However, the one area that he creates pause, for me, is his usage of terms like elite, best, etc...and Hutch falls into the category of guys where his terminology is questioned. He's the best player in practice and he has elite athleticism. That's where, I believe, many opinions have been born.

I'd like to see the guy string multiple (or any) games together in the O & B before saying that he's going to be playing 60%+ of each game.

We did fine with that last year aside from the Mizzou game. Otherwise we handled our business.
Better than prior years but...
Ohio +1 at half
Nebraska -1 at half, tied at end of regulation
PSU tied at half
Freshmen should have had a lot of tick in the 2nd half of these games.

and of course....
Loyola -9 at half

Its not just the things BU has said its reports from other people as well as watching the videos of his training and previous highlights. The athleticism piece definitely jumps out at you when watching any of those clips and it seems like he is a smooth ballhandler who can shoot. Theres definitely a lot to like there.

Why I’m confident for this year though is that we only need those 25ish minutes filled at a replacement level to be really good and we have 4 guys (Hutch plus the 3 FROSH). So we only need a 25% hit rate. I’m confident at least one of those 4 guys can contribute to the level of, say, Ace last year.

Just to throw something different out there…

Late game defensive lineup

Trent
Hutch
Grand
Payne
Kofi

You get an on ball dog with Trent, length and athleticism 2-4, and have the giant in the back. Get the rebound, call timeout and put curbelo back in.

The hardest lineup for me to create in my head is late game offense. Plummer, Trent and curbelo are options together but do we wanna go that small? I’d think only 2 of the 3. Do leave your leader off (Trent) or one of your best shooters(Plummer?) That’s then a Hutch at the 4 lineup if we play all 3? Do we put in Kofi if we’re down 3 and they can foul him?

That’s why BU makes 3MM+ per year. It’s good because we will potentially have 1-2 very good players on the bench, which means the 5 on the court are serious, but it’s tough cause you gotta choose the right 5 for that situation, and that might hurt some feelings.
It is hard to believe a defensive line up would not include De'Monte.

Once the tune ups are over....I'll bet one of my nicer beach houses Curbelo is at 35 min pg.

I wouldn't be super confident, but I'd take that bet. It's rare for a player to avg 35, and rarer on a deep team. If anyone averages 35, it will probably be AC, though.

Coleman will have to take a massive leap and vastly improve on his 6 min per game for the season and likely less in the B10 games, 1.4 pts, .8 reb, and 34% FG to see starter minutes in the B10. If you wouldn't be shocked the who do you see him jumping at the 4 the depth chart? Especailly now that BU said you can expect to see Payne play the 4 too when Kofi is on the floor.
I really do hope he improves drastically and challenges the guys that are ahead of him. I just don't see him surpassing them this year. The depth at the 3 with Hutch, 3 top rated freshmen (BU has had one or two surprise every year), and DW this also should allow DW to be our third option at the 4 behind Jacob and Payne like he did last year when was ahead of Coleman in that role. You think he will leap those 3 guys at the four and get starters minutes? I just don't see that much opportunity for such huge of a leap so quickly especailly with the addition of Payne and DW coming back.
No one expected DW to shoot over 50% from the 3 last year, but hard work and experience can elevate a player's performance to surprising results. If Hawkins is the third option at the 4, he needs to transfer because he was a recruiting miss.

Not necessarily. Hawkins has 4 years of eligibility. If he doesn't crack the rotation/or is a marginal rotation guy this season, that doesn't mean he won't be a solid rotation piece next season.

Or, the veterans ahead of him graduate and he starts next year. The folks perceived ahead of him are proven B1G players.

I love Belo, but our backcourt is too deep to be giving out 35 minutes and 30+ to Trent. I also like Payne more than most on here and think he will get 18+ minutes a game, something similar to Grandison and Hutcherson. If Payne can up his ft% he could find himself with plenty of opportunities late in games.

I understand your point, but if the reports prove to be true and Illinois signs the caliber of player that we are recruiting, then Hawkins could be recruited over. I still feel that he will be playing more minutes than others do so I'm hoping that he will prove that his ranking was accurate.

You’re right and to be honest I’m not totally convinced either — just going with what some have said. We’ll see, and 25 mpg may well be too much. But unless all reports are way off (or he gets re-injured), have to think he’s good for 10-15 mpg.

30 for Kofi, Trent and Curbelo. Everyone else, earn em. 35 too many, maybe occasionally. It will be interesting because as someone above said we can have so many lineups available.

#169
DBHeadband, I think you are a little too top heavy with minutes. My guess is:

Curbelo 28
Trent 27
Kofi 26
Hutch 22
Plummer 22
Damonte 21
Jake 16
Payne 12
Hawkins 12
freshmen, others 14

The freshmen/other minutes might be overstated a little, but hopefully we are dominant enough to allow them some minutes against the lesser competitive teams. We need to be better about not letting NW, Neb, and others hang around to the end. Would also see us play at a very fast pace to wear down opponents. If our depth of talent is as great as some on here believe it to be, then we should have no problem running teams into the ground.

It's definitely one of the fixer upper beach houses.....
