or....
-No hosting NCAA Tournament games at your home arena- After we lost an elite 8 game at KY against KY....and yes, Dickie Beal did travel!!
-Reviewing balls that are touched before going out of bounds in the last 2 minutes of the game- after we got hosed against Miami in the NCAA Tourney
I mentioned those earlier but I forgot about 2000 against Michigan. We are the most cursed team in basketball it seems.

I have made some comments about our great history in the Big Ten Tournament and why I am optimistic we can really improve our seed there this year, and I was looking back at the history ... wow! Look at how good we were in the BTT from its inception in the 1998 season through 2005:

Record: 16-6 (.727)
Championships: 2 out of 8
Finals: 4 out of 8
Semifinals: 8 out of 8

And WOW is the United Center a great advantage! Both of our championships and 3 of our 4 championship game appearances happened in Chicago, and we won nearly 77% of our games there during that timespan. We really did kind of own the BTT in its early years.

Since then, we have had some nice runs here and there (2008 miracle run to the championship), but it has been a lot more disappointment (e.g., the Michigan plane crash game.......) until winning it last year. Chicago is definitely where we prefer to play, though!

Chicago, IL: 17-8 (.680)
Indianapolis, IN: 14-10 (.583)
New York, NY: 0-1 (.000)
Washington, DC: 0-1 (.000)

With that said, we went 3-0 in Indy last year, so let's go do it again!!

If anyone wants to feel a little better in case Nebrasketball can’t help us out, Duke just won their first ACC regular season championship since 2010..in which they shared it with Maryland!!!! That being said, I somehow hope we’re playing for a share Sunday night, win the BTT and at least make the Sweet 16

wow. Didn't know that about Dukee. Interesting. Coach K will be gone. I would settle for Big Ten Tournament title and Elite 8 :)

Concerning RJ Melendez, only the surgeon and team doctor know when he will return, so speculation is useless. This kid has such a bright future that I doubt they will be anything but conservative on this issue of RTP (return to play). Plus, RTP is always a fluid situation dependent upon progress.

We don't know what his condition was prior to the surgery, nor do we know what the surgeon found when they did the surgery. In fact, I have not seen anything that confirms whether he had a laparoscopic procedure, standard surgery, or a laparoscopic procedure to start that had to be converted to a wider incision. And if he had laparoscopic surgery, did he have the standard 3 small incision type, or did he have the somewhat long term riskier LA procedure of a single slightly wider incision type? Too many unknowns.

I honestly don't know how anyone could need to feel better about this program right now....considering where we were 5 years ago. The last three years has been some of the best Illinois basketball any of us will ever remember.

Go ahead and put Ayo, Kofi, Trent right next to Nick, Kendall, and Kenny....and Dee, Deron, and Luther.
We will talk about these last 3 years misses, Covid and what could have been...but this has been the best team in the B1G over these last 3 years.

Championships mean something, tournament success means something, but sustained success and a top program is what leads to more chances for those things.

There's many kudos to pass out among players and coaches...but the beginning, and the belief of JW and Brad Underwood has turned out to be....in a word from a 'zero star', out of nowhere recruit that invaded our orange hearts....amazing.

This year has been absolutely crazy with high profile transfers, injury and suspensions, and all 3 Assistant coaches leaving. Brad Underwood has proven...again...how adaptable and flexible he is.
He's good. We're good.

Let's go have a March to remember!

I think we are the type of team that could "not show up" and get bounced early again ... but I also think we are the type of team that, if we make it all the way to the Elite Eight and are playing that hot, you might as well have us going to the Final Four, too. :) Things haven't 100% clicked for us that often this year due to a variety of factors, but if everybody is on ... we are more than capable of a deep run.

Agreed. I’m really like this 5 out set with Hawkins as something very different from our normal lineup. At this point, we’re probably playing in Milwaukee. We could technically pass Purdue for Indy if we keep winning and they unravel. For the regionals, I am really hoping we sneak into Chicago(I live here) and my second wish is avoiding Duke’s regional because ticket prices will skyrocket for Coach K’s last run.

As a fellow Chicagoan, I agree! I would love to see us playing for an Elite Eight or Final Four in front of a sea of orange! I think our 2005 team might have gone down in Illini history similarly to the 2001 squad if that Arizona game hadn't been played in the Chicago Area ... I believe James said as much himself!

Did you get this backwards??

Lol, this was a very confusing sentence given we played Arizona both times ... but I meant I don't think the '05 squad stages that Elite Eight comeback if the crowd in Rosemont doesn't pull them past the finish line, meaning they would go down similarly to our 2001 Elite Eight team in fans' minds, rather than as one of the two greatest Illini teams ever. :)

Woke up this morning, like most here, completely deflated as our chance at sharing a reg season title now hinges on a third straight outrageous Husker road performance on Sunday.

Then that BU | We Will Win video @skyldub posted gave me chills. I'm back :illinois:

Thanks, brother.

B1G First team this year should look like
Murray
Ivey
Davis
Liddell
Kofi

Would take that 5 against almost any first-team all B1G team I can remember
I have wondered what a post season all star series would be like. Pitting all stars from each conference against each other. I am sure there are 100 reasons why it would never happen, but with NIL it would be an interesting way to get some players some compensation.

The main benefit of the 2005 game being in Rosemont was the refs didn't have the stones to allow Arizona 56 free throws to Illinois' 25 like 2001. They wouldn't have made it out of the arena alive.

6 Illini players fouled out of that game, one of the biggest hor$e$hit hose jobs of all time.

That's called mismanaging a game ... badly. I remember being in Georgetown at a college sportsbar. Had I been at home, I would have likely busted my first TV.

With NIL, I wonder if there's any reason a private entity couldn't put this together, in the offseason, as an exhibition event?
