Last year the Braggin' Rights date was announced (along with the entire non-conference schedule) on August 9th.

The full schedule typically gets released in August or early September.

Now that we know who the roster is for the most part, any leaks on what we’ll be doing schematically, defensively?

I think switching 2-5 is the most likely thing we’ll see. But I wanna know what our base is? Are we denying? Are we no middle? Are we gapping?

Somebody with some knowledge help us out.

Would seem we are well stocked in bigs and would be in past times but Mayer is gone and Hawkins and Dainja could be NBA bound or transfers. A 23-24 team with a developed Perrin with Hawkins and Dainja would be awesome. Lieb might be able to contribute at that point. These guys all play like fours and will be a problem for teams with a big, slow post player. Really like having a young player to develop rather than an emergency bench warmer.

Gavitt Games are such an incomplete representation. Only 8 games. Last year B1G was 2-6 against Big East.

Interesting matchups this year will be Villanova at MSU, IN at Xavier, and IA at Seton Hall.

I watched the Flying Illini manhandle Michigan at Assembly Hall January 1989 on B10 network last night. That was a fun team. Pressed full court most of the game. All 5 players could switch to guard any position. The athleticism of Battle, Gill, Anderson, Hamilton, Smith and Bardo was amazing.

We have some great athletes on the 2023 team -- RJ, TSJ, Coleman and Matt M. Dain, Ty, Jayden and Skyy are unknowns at this time.

I am hoping that Brad brings back the full court press and run at every opportunity. Its how kids want to play these days and our team roster suits it.

I know we are turning over our roster with 8 new faces/talents/players. I believe I saw/read that Arkansas has 11 New players. Haven't kept up but know LSU will have a large number of new players. 2022 Men's College Basketball free agency.

Purdue signed 4 HS players
two 4 star wingmen one 3 star and a 7' giant from Sweden
They added PG from Utah 8 ppg

They lost two guards to the portal Eric Hunter 6 ppg Isiah thomas 4 ppg
They lost Sasha Stefanovic 10 ppg Jaden Ivey 17 ppg and Trevion Williams 12 ppg to NBA

Of their top 10 players They still have
7'2" Zach Edey 14 ppg
6'6" Gilliss 6 ppg
6'10" Furst 4 ppg
6'5" Newman 5 ppg

so ~29 ppg returning. They have more experience returning but we have two big name transfer portal recruits.

I would call us even.

Well I was. Others as well. Not exactly sure what happened that we lost him. But experience and maturity are worth a ton. He shot well and played a pretty smart game. People love the shiny new thing and lots of fans dismiss the tried and true.

Still think this is too low. I believe the board overrates CoHawk and RJ but this ranking grossly underrates Shannon and Mayer in my opinion.

Jacob was great for feeding Kofi and hitting wide open jumpers when opponents doubled Kofi. Never forced his shot. Worked hard on defense and rebounding. Not super athletic but very smooth. Could not really create his own shot or drive to the hoop. Very good complementary team player.

With Ayo, Kofi and Andre gone we need playmakers who can create their own shots and opportunities for others.

I think both Brad and Jacob realized that Illinois might be the best opportunity for him.

Sad to see him go because he was class act and part of two very good Illini teams. Excited he can get opportunity at Duke. Should be interesting to see how much he gets to play vs. 5 star freshman recruits.

Good info summary. Don't forget Purdue's Ethan Morton (DMW never will - top five ever Illini GIF's).

And, imo we are much better than Purdue.

Agree. Jake was a star in his role, but his role was limited as you described above. Was a great player for us and I will miss him. And this isn’t a shot against Jake by any means, but both Mayer and Shannon >> Jake, and, honestly, decent chance Ty Rogers > Jake too. There’s a reason Jake moved on and it’s because we are absolutely loaded at the wing.

If Jake is worth an extra 6-7 slots, there’s an argument to be made we are under ranked by 12-14 slots because we now have better players than Jake at the wing.

1989 Illini were one of the best 10 teams in college BB history. The versatility was unbelievable. Kenny Battle was considered the power forward (if you fell the necessity to position label each player) . He was no more 6'4" and was the point on that 1-2-2 full court press🤗
