Hey Pruman, you are a respected voice on this board, what is your real, no jokes, opinion about this whole glue guy is essential argument?I think he's just a ""super "" glue guy.........................I really really do..................
Essential ??..........................maybe ............maybe not...........If your roster is full of high effort and skilled players I feel a true point guard is probably the most important position on the team.......A coach on the court , kinda like how Deron Williams and Dee Brown were for the 2005 squad......Hey Pruman, you are a respected voice on this board, what is your real, no jokes, opinion about this whole glue guy is essential argument?
Great thoughts Pru. At its core I think “glue guy” is usually applied to someone not as talented as other players on the team but still makes a significant impact on winning. Guys that lack in talent often leverage effort and leadership, amongst other things, to make that impact. I think Feliz may have been the actual glue guy and not having him in ‘21 hurt. I don’t think he lets us lose to Loyola.Essential ??..........................maybe ............maybe not...........If your roster is full of high effort and skilled players I feel a true point guard is probably the most important position on the team.......A coach on the court , kinda like how Deron Williams and Dee Brown were for the 2005 squad......
A glue guy definition has progressed from what we used to call an all around player when i played BB in grade school and HS......one who plays good D , rebounds and is a stat stuffer in all the major game stats.....
When I think of GLUE , it is something that binds things together...........that to me is the definition of a true point guard .....holding players accountable for their play , like a general holding his troops together to get the best results.....A glue guy on a team might be good but not great in multiple areas of play but he is not a general acting player........
DMW was a glue guy , for sure , but his play was lacking in certain areas of play and I didn't see much of the general aspects of holding players accountable for their play.....maybe he did but it seemed to me his personality was not a rah-rah guy ....He let his actions speak for him.....and he was hard nosed but that hard nosed attitude sometimes got the best of him......
Brad has said many times that each years roster is so different from the year before and some years you may not need a glue guy as much as other years........The old adage that elite talent makes up for some inadequities elsewhere is tried and true......
to sum up my feeble attempt to answer your question , make up of a roster is , in my humble opinion , means a leader on and off the court is more essential than a " glue guy " and that leader's lead by example approach might not be a glue guy definition .......
To me the most essential aspect in every year's roster is confidence in yourself , your teammates and in your coaching staff.......Confidence can overcome a poor shooting night or a height disadvantage or a trio of blind refs......not every night , but I always wanted my teammates thinking we could win every game and giving an all out effort to win that game that day.......
JMHO
Have you had a chance to see what it would take this year to catch Purdue in the all-time winning percentage?I was looking up something separate for the football forum, but I wanted to drop this fun stat in here. We have the following win streaks to protect this year in conference play, fellas!
Northwestern: W8 (play x2)
Michigan: W5 (home only)
Iowa: W5 (away only)
Nebraska: W5 (play x2)
Wisconsin: W4 (play x2)
Minnesota: W4 (play x2)
Penn State: W4 (play x2)
Michigan State: W2 (home only)
Excellent chance to turn NU into our first double-digit winning streak vs. a conference opponent in quite a while. We also have a great chance to extend our hilarious domination of Juwan, with Michigan only traveling to Champaign. Keeping Iowa alive will require a great effort by our guys ... really hoping the game in Iowa City is on a Saturday so (1) I can go, as my parents live there, and (2) so the place can be swarming with orange!
I return the compliment back at you ........Dre is the perfect example of a glue guy in the fact that he did whatever he could to get the win for the team....i will always be amazed at Dre for how he could navigate through the " Tall tree's " in the paint and get a much needed hoop for the beloved......Great thoughts Pru. Damn, I must have signatures accidentally turned off, because I always forget about this! These are the all-time records through last year:Have you had a chance to see what it would take this year to catch Purdue in the all-time winning percentage?
The glue metaphor is that its the kind of player who takes other pieces and combines them together into something larger and more solid, right?I guess that’s why it’s important to identify what a “glue guy” is. I’d say it’s someone who takes pride in is defense, hustles, gets on the floor, makes the right play, supports his teammates, and worries a lot more about the scoreboard than the box score.
Give me all the glue guys.
I prefer if we go 34-0 and they burn in hell!Damn, I must have signatures accidentally turned off, because I always forget about this! These are the all-time records through last year:
Illinois: 1,856-1,041 (.64066)
Purdue: 1,884-1,053 (.64147)
I haven't analyzed how many games both teams play, but just messing around in a sloppy Excel setup ... if we go 24-10 and they go 19-12 or something like that (seems plausible enough!), we would overtake them - .64142 to .64117.

It's been a few years since I have seen those (conference) numbers, but I think at the time Indiana was #1 and we were #2, with Purdue in third.I always thought it was conference record, but we obviously hadn't played 3900 conference games. Thank you.
2,900 would be a lot too!I always thought it was conference record, but we obviously hadn't played 3900 conference games. Thank you.
I ran some numbers based on 30 and 35 game schedules and both teams playing the same number of games this year and we would pass them if we have 4 more wins, so to just add to what Fighter gave, it is realistic that we would pass them this season. Very plausible.I always thought it was conference record, but we obviously hadn't played 3900 conference games. Thank you.
Got me! That's what I get for trying to more than one thing at a time.2,900 would be a lot too!

Shocker for me on that list is that Arizona had a team one year before we did.Hi Nightman,
Where did you get your numbers? According to this Wikipedia article we already have a higher all time winning percentage compared to Purdue and we need to win 9 more games than them this season to overtake them on total wins
I usually use Sports Reference ... it feels like the most up-to-date and reliable. Here are the pages:Hi Nightman,

Interesting, I think those numbers include 18 Purdue wins that were vacated from the 1995-96 season so it depends on what you want to countI usually use Sports Reference ... it feels like the most up-to-date and reliable. Here are the pages:
