What did everyone think about the Orange/Blue/Orange/Blue sections? I prefer just a orange out but am curious what others think

Athletic article (paywall) from John Hollinger about his 10 returning NCAA players who have caught his eye and your Illini have not one but TWO players on the list: TSJ and Hawkins. And, in a parentheses, he mentions he could have easily put 4 of our players on this list -- Mayer and RJ being the other two -- though the in-game evidence isn't conclusive yet of course. What a time to be alive!

Pretty inexcusable, imo. I went on a little rant about this earlier, but we don't do a good job of taking advantage of our amazing student section.

It would take some tedious research to find out (which is why I'm not volunteering) but I'd love to know how our ratio of student seating vs public seating compares to other marquee cbb venues. My impression is it is much too small. With all the TV money, one would think we could add some student seating at the expense of some lost ticket revenue.

Ok fine, I'll do some research.

Purdue dedicates 10 of Mackey's 26 sections to student seating.
Kansas allots 4k of their 16k seats to students.

Meanwhile, in our 15,500 capacity arena, we set aside a meager 1,200 seats for our students. *The university sells 3k student tickets. 1,800 of which are relegated to the 200 section. There has been some recent and imo rightful consternation about this from the students. Source

However, it looks like other universities suffer from the same problem we do - catering to influential donors and season ticket holders. In my brief research I saw complaints from UNC, Kentucky, and Indiana that their best seats are wasted on donors who rarely stand up or get loud.

I agree there should be more room for students. The media sits in front of the orange crush too, which I find strange and obstructing. I sat with the "old crush" in the front row last year of the orange krush and it was kind of hard to see over them. You could get a couple more rows if they were moved. IMO there's no need for them to be courtside.

At least as far back as when I was a student (10 years ago), the Orange Krush has been treated like a second class student section. Its so bizarre that so many students would be relegated to the 200 level. Listen, I love our arena and I love this school, but the view from up there is terrible. Its SO far away from the court. When you are a student, that should be a perk is that you get good seats for the games. If the entire stadium was like the $$$ 100 section, it would be quieter than a church. The students are your most important fans. Treat them like that. But no, on top of giving the students barely any access to the good seats, now you are taking even more seats away from them? The DIA should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

I think part of the problem has to do with the renovation in 2014 during the Groce years. It was going to cost $160M+ and Thomas was tapping every conceivable source of funding. Attendance had dropped off significantly from the late aughts and the thought of alienating the shrinking long-term fan base was a consideration as they moved those folks further from the court. They threw a crumb to the students with the on-floor seating and to the deep pocket folks with the premium seating but many long-term blue-collar fans were going to be pushed further up. Every added prime student seat meant another disgruntled season ticket holder when attendance was already shrinking and additional funding was crucial. Capacity was also being lost with the renovation (over 1000 seats), yet sellouts were virtually nonexistent after the renovation until last year when they had five.

This is pretty much what I had assumed happened. What a remarkable lack of foresight.

The donors may not stand up and get loud, but if they pony up for NIL opportunities, they will help the program at least as much as a big loud student section.
Probably an unpopular opinion, but that’s the world we live in.

They get tickets in the legacy club, traditions, suites and the floor(sideline) Give the krush the seats they have had on the floor and behind the basket. They are what make SFC/assembly hall what it is.
