Just an idle thought, is there an equipment standard (i.e. rim tension) in BIG? Wisconsin rims sound like they are ready to fall off in game vs Maryland.
I mean the Bucks mascot Bango literally ripped one of the rims off during the halftime show of the Maryland @ Wisconsin game...

Curious why Tennessee is so high on every list. Lost to a 4-5 Colorado team and beat Kansas and USC, but haven't played any other quality teams. Nothing against them, just curious.
Could be because they have some pretty large victory margins. They did beat Kansas by 14 also.

The game in West Lafayette is sold out and a 1st row center court seat is at $1300ish now. I might do it, but ouch.
I'll take it as a sign of how far we've come in the last couple of years.

This is coming from NBA.com which takes you to Bleacher Reports mock draft on Dec. 7th.

35. Philadelphia 76ers (via Hornets): Coleman Hawkins
(Illinois, PF, Sophomore)

Hawkins’ triple-double against Syracuse highlighted shooting and passing that creates versatility that NBA teams value from their bigs.

36. Los Angeles Lakers (via Bulls): Terrence Shannon (Illinois, SF, Senior)

Shannon continued his to build on a breakout season with 12 points in overtime to knock off No. 2 Texas. While his improved playmaking (3.5 assists) has been a bonus this season, it’s the combination of new shooting confidence ( and explosiveness that’s made Shannon a more believable pro prospect after three seasons at Texas Tech.

I really think Coleman will be a late first rounder. I guess I am biased and we will see. But I like a sentence probably from a power ranking article, "Hawkins can guard any (college) player in the country. " I think that is true.

We're now 1/3 of the way through the season and to get the bad taste from today's game out of my mouth, I wanted to take a step back and assess where we are based on my preseason expectations.

I figured November and December would be a season of learning to play together and it has been just that.

At 7-3 (0-2), we're right where I thought we would be, although the route we took to get here was unexpected. (The Texas and PSU outcomes being the surprises.)

Today's loss is a huge bummer coming right after the Texas win because we expect progress to be linear. But it's usually not. It's a 2 steps forward, 1 step back kind of dance.

Frankly, I didn't even expect us to be ranked at this point so by that measure, we're outperforming expectations.

Individually, I've been most surprised by Dain and Sencire. I'm not sure what the O/U was on their per game minutes going into the season but I probably would have bet the under. They've been instrumental in most of our 7 wins. (Ps. That put back Sencire had today...what??)

And there really haven't been any disappointments individually.

Collectively, I knew the defense would be a work in progress. But I assumed with the talent we had, the offense would come a lot easier. And I must say, I am a bit nervous about whether we'll get the new schemes figured out in time to win the Big Ten. We'll see.

All in all, we're still on track to have another great season. Just need to steal one in the B1G.

Ok, I feel better.

Does BU make defensive adjustments during this break or does he stick with switch everything.
Is it the team hasn’t gelled yet or is it not working? I think it is a great wrinkle just like the press but is very hard to pull off for 40 minutes

It is hard to be too critical when we beat the number 2 team in the nation but let’s be honest we have not played well against UT MD or PSU for most of those games

Feel like the press has not be very effective either. It looked solid in our come back win over UCLA, which had me really excited about the defensive identify of this team and the potential to generate offense from defense. But it doesn't seem like we've been as committed to it in the few times it has been employed since then. In the Maryland game, I remember CH getting frustrated when others weren't coming up to guard the outlets on the wings when he was on the point in the back court.

With tomorrow appearance in the AP poll we will be one week behind Michigan State on the All-time AP votes list. Currently we have 488 weekly votes, to Michigan State's 490. Michigan State is very unlikely to make it. Hopefully in next week's poll we will be tied for 10th all-time.

I just don’t get the Hawkins hype! He is just way to inconsistent in my mind. Not enough Syracuse games in him and way to many disappearing acts. Still think he has the talent, but needs to come to play every nigh.

Good summary!

I do think we could call RJ a dissapointment, compared to how many of us (including me) were hyping him up pre-season. But that is me being nitpicky. He has looked a lot more confident the past few games. I was expecting better ball handling, he scares me whenever he starts dribbling and especially when he comes flying around the top of the key in that weave handoff we do. For now, he just needs to do what he's good at. He can still be an elite shooter who will also cut to the basket and finish in traffic. The potential is through the roof and we have to remember he is only a sophomore who didn't need to do much last year.

Right now, Torvik and Kenpom have Purdue as clear frontrunners in the B1G. I'm still not buying it, as I think the conference will know how to compete with them better than early non conference teams can. I see them in the 15-25 range which is where us, Maryland, Indiana, and Iowa are right now.

With the conference being a jumbled mess, I think the +/- conference standings are a good way to keep track of who is doing good and who is struggling. The conference record doesn't tell the whole story, and +/- also takes the bias out of the equation. For example, the stats say Iowa losing at home to Wisconsin is pretty much the same as us losing at home to Penn St. But in general, fans will see Penn St as being a worse loss because of the perception of that program.

For anyone that doesn't know, +/- is a simple way tracking teams by giving a team +1 for road wins and -1 for home losses. Road losses and home wins don't count as anything. I'm not aware of any website that tracks this, so I will try to update these standings throughout the year. Right now it looks like this....

Michigan +1
Northwestern +1
Purdue +1
Wisconsin +1
Indiana 0
Maryland 0
Michigan St 0
Ohio St 0
Penn St 0
Rutgers 0
Illinois -1
Iowa -1
Minnesota -1
Nebraska -1

My expectations weren't quite as high for RJ. Which isn't a knock on him. He was unsustainably good in very limited opportunities last year so I assumed some "regression". I think in the preseason I compared his role on this year's team to Grandy. Just needs to be solid and dependable. Occasionally breakout and be our leading scorer. I think you nailed it. Threes and opportunistic plays at the rim.

Last week, I may have put MM on the disappointments list. But he averaged 17.5 points over the two games last week so he's safe for now.

He put up 6-6-7 in 31 minutes.
That's not a disappearing act IMHO.
I'm a CoHawk fan, but the PSU game was one of his worst as an Illini, IMO. His defensive intensity was low, his body language was possibly the worst on the court (although body language was crap for most of them), his offensive effort was pretty weak to my eyes. I don't want to rag on a guy, but he's supposed to be one of the leaders of this team, and as far as leadership went on Saturday he wasn't even in SFC.

How are the player’s final week structured. Is it like a normal college kid or is it spaced out. I know this is a tough part of the year with school and holiday stresses. With a young team this is the first year some of the kids are dealing with being away from family during this time of year. I am sure they have a support structure

In case you haven't noticed, we in general overhype all our players. I think Hawkins is a good enough player, and I think someone will take him in the second round. But he's not the incredible talent some here make him out to be.

Highest ceiling among our upper-classman. That's the answer.

He's certainly NOT an incredible talent. Very few are. But, he has a really high ceiling for development. Especially if he can keep him emotions under control and yet play with emotional edge that helps drive him to success.

We don't really disagree on that. I'm just saying, he was on per-40 track for a triple double, so even Bad CoHawk didn't disappear.
Silver lining, that makes Great CoHawk pretty scary.
