Offensively they weren’t that interchangeable. Bardo was clearly the PG, Gill the 2, Anderson the 3, Battle 4, and Hamilton the 5.
Not to be nit-picky...but I believe Gill was the PG.

Is he?
Hmmm. Then why did the media types (at the time) talk about UI losing their PG when Gill went out with his foot injury and it costing us a few wins and ultimately the B1G championship? I do realize Bardo played PG when Gill was out and could play PG in general too...I just thought Gill was the main man at PG when he was healthy? Maybe not?Bardo was the PG
Might have been mentioned already as I do not read all the threads here, but someone said he unfollowed IlliniMBB and deleted his commitment post on IG.Hell if I know. But that's the TL/DR version (which the OP asked for).
I seem to have the sense that Bardo was more of the PG, but it was a very versatile group. What a talented group.Hmmm. Nope. In the half court offense, Bardo or Larry Smith would be the point guard. Bardo was not a natural point though. He was really more of a small forward. Not to be nit-picky...but I believe Gill was the PG.![]()
Larry Smith was co-6th man with Liberty when everyone was healthy. He was really the closest to a natural point guard on the team.Bardo was point as far as bringing the ball up the court but Larry Smith had the most assists on the team.
As far as distributing the ball, Smith averaged the most assists on the team while playing a lot less minutes. He was for sure the best true point guard on that team.Larry Smith was co-6th man with Liberty when everyone was healthy. He was really the closest to a natural point guard on the team.
Unless he’s playin’ the long game…You may have missed, as I did, that the tweet was dated December 28, 2021 and not 2022. I don't know what the tweet meant, but I am pretty sure it is not connected to the current rumors.
They did not. You might be conflating that with the loss of Steve Lanter in 1979?Hmmm. Then why did the media types (at the time) talk about UI losing their PG
Definitely Bardo. Can't say I have much recollection of the news articles from 1989.Hmmm. That is why I don’t put too much into social media posts.
Nope Bardo was the primary PG and ball handler... Gill played some too as did Smith but it was Bardo who started and ran the offenseHmmm. 19 player roster? Is that even allowed today?I seem to have the sense that Bardo was more of the PG, but it was a very versatile group. What a talented group.

Bardo was the point. Backup point Larry Smith actually led the team in assists. Gill was a natural 2-guard.Hmmm. Do we read this as he does get to play basketball this month? Or, he *hopes* to play basketball again this month?
A couple things. First, I think at that point we were still at 15 scholarships on the men's side. At some point that changed when the Title IX provisions were interpreted to mean that men and women had to have equal participation so every athlete on the men's side had to be met with one on the women's side. This was achieved by cutting some men's scholarships and even men's sports.19 player roster? Is that even allowed today?
