This is exactly my order. I love them all for various skills but for a pure point guard I would pick Derek Harper every time.
I would put Frankie Williams above them ALL. If you saw him play, he could do everything on the court and no one could stop him. He did not have a strong pro career but we are talking Illini . A MUCH better shooter and driver than Harper. I agree with OB and Pru... no one better as an Illini than HRF.

Harper set a record by improving his scoring average for (I think ) 8 straight years in the pros . But he started out low and got better. Great defensive player too. But as a point guard Frankie was unmatched... IMHO... and I go back to the Les Buzboom days!

Except when he played Loyola and got absolutely embarrassed.

I will never put Ayo in the same tier as Deron, Dee, Williams, Harper, Gill, or Anderson simply for how bad that game was.

Placing such an over reliance on one game takes away from how special Ayo was. He is absolutely one of the best closers Illini have had.

That's honestly probably the correct viewpoint but that game just left such a bad taste in my mouth I can't separate it from the rest of his college career(doesn't help 2020 was cancelled).

I’ve had to think hard about this and I do believe you’re right — at least in the time that I’ve been a fan (82-83 season was my first).

I don’t recall any player more reliable than Ayo when you needed a bucket at the end of the game. He just had a certain Jordanesque quality to him that I’ve never before seen in an illini player. And that’s no knock against Harper, Douglas, Frankie, Nick, Dee, Deron or any of the other greats. Ayo was clutch. Kiwane Garris might be my number two in that regard, but it’s a distant second. Kiwane always had the ball in his hands at the end.

Ayo was truly special.

Frank did a great deal for us and was an incredible player. He was also shut down and dominated when he played against quicker guards, like Jay Williams of Duke for example. There were others. There was no one who was ever able to shut down Deron Williams that I recall.

I'm sure there were guys that shut down Frankie, but it wasn't Jay Williams. I remember the '01 season like it was yesterday. My two best friends and I were home on Thanksgiving break and still talk about that game. That was a fun team to watch, and that loss vs. Duke didn't cost a #1 seed.

In the 72-69 loss in 1999-2000, Frankie went 14/1/3 (with 2 TOs); JasonJay Williams went for 17/7/7 (6 TOs)

In the 78-77 loss in 2000-2001, Frankie went for 19/4/4 (albeit with 9 TOs); JasonJay Williams went for 23/7/3 (with 5 TOs).

In neither game was Frankie shut down.

I go back to Tal Brody. I would never try to argue that Frank wasn't the best Illini point guard of all time. I think he probably was. I'm just saying if I were in charge of choosing sides I think I'd pick Harper as my point guard, however, I wouldn't spend any time arguing the point. Pun unintended.

1 - Rodgers / Harmon / DGL / Moretti
2 - Shannon / Harris / Harmon
3 - Domask / Goode / Shannon
4 - Guerrier / Hawkins / Goode
5 - Hawkins / Dainja / Amani

I have Harmon, Goode, and Dainja being the first guard, wing, and big respectively off the bench.

Thoughts?

Why is Moretti way down at the end of the bench? I've never seen him, or two of your other point guards play, but just wondered why he is so low in your estimation.

That's fair. I think I just put him down there based on some of the things the insiders have said about him still not being ready. Also Harmon just has a ton of experience and there was some raving about DGL a week or two ago.

I loved the time HRF lit up Kansas (30 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 0 TOs) in a Sweet 16 win, dominating Kansas' touted guards (Kirk Heinrich, fouled out with 14 points and 5 TOs) and Jeff Boschee (3 points in 40 minutes, 1-7 from the floor and 2 TOs) in the process. Great performance. Link

I flew on an airplane for the first time to see those games. The KU game was awesome. Two nights later was not.

I'd honestly lean towards swapping Guerrier and Goode but I agree with everything else.

Can never have too much shooting and having Goode and Domask on the court at the same time would be a bunch of shooting.

I'd also like to see a small ball lineups at times of Harmon, Shannon, Domask, Goode, Guerrier. Which would give you 5 guys capable of shooting above average from 3.

The starting 2-4 have 4,344 career points. I thought we were loaded last year on the wing but dang.

I don’t see Dainja coming off the bench. Hawkins will start over Guerrier. But lineups may chang by competition also.

I do have Hawkins starting. I chose to have Dainja coming off the bench due to the lack of shooting in my starting lineup if he's in. With him and Rodgers being non-shooters in addition to Hawkins who's questionable at best, there just wouldn't be enough shooting imo.

Ty should be ahead of Goode at the 4.

Is that the game when if an illini player moved it was a foul?
Yes, and 6’7” Richard Jefferson was able to do things that should have sent him to prison. Lute Olson told everyone in the country for two days that z Illinois was so physical and dirty. The refs called the game EXACTLY how Lute needed it to be called. Only chance they had.
