This was said in the prior thread, 'IMO Ty Rodgers should not be the point guard. He is the best weak side rebounder Illinois has had since Neil Bresnahan.'

I give Ty huge props for stepping into a need --just shows what a consummate team player will do for you, and in the long run it may be really good for his development. But, I think of what he's best at (a dog around the basket --dunno if Barkley would be a good comp) and what he seems weakest at, and find myself scratching my head on this one. Yeah, he's a good passer, has decent handles, and good feel and tenaciousness for scoring around the basket. But his shooting, especially his FT shooting, has me concerned this is more experiment than a future success story. They say necessity is the mother of invention. Will make a helluva story if it does work. I could see this turning into a feel-good movie with a montage of him working his butt off over the summer on his road to the NBA. :) That's the dream anyway

Ty should definitely be the PG.

Nothing says a PG has to be at the top of the key shooting 3s. He can definitely still do a lot of damage inside and on the glass even if he is playing point. His rebounding skill is all about effort, good movement, and instincts for being in the right place. He's not like Kofi that gets rebounds by being big and close to the basket.

Just to tie the last thread to this one…

1. Frank Williams is the best PG Illinois has ever had. We have had a bunch of them. HRF is the best.

2. People saying that the 05 team was missing a center? James Augustine had to be one of the most criminally underappreciated players in my lifetime. He was ABSOLUTELY the perfect center for that squad. Rebounding machine, tremendous defender that could switch on to guards, could shoot enough to keep you honest and an absolute deer running the floor.

I’m all for giving Ty a shot but isn’t this why Jaylon Tate was not successful? Great handles and passing but zero threat of a shot allows defenses to sag off significantly?

Do you think teams will want to give Ty two or three steps to get downhill toward the rim? He’s going to embarrass them if they do that.
Jaylon Tate?

Seems lots of posters want Ty at the four because of his rebounding. He would be an undersized four as opposed to a bully one. Ayo was second only to Kofi in rebounding. Remember one of UConn’s national champs having a 6’ guard as second high rebounder. Belo was fourth in rebounding his frosh year despite limited minutes and he couldn’t shoot from three. The threat to take the ball to the hoop does as much to spread the floor as three point shooting. Not sure of Ty’s ability to pass and handle the ball but very sure he has the leadership qualities and think that may be the most important asset to play the point. It also may be his best fit when we have Hawk, QG, and Hansbury to play the four and Goode and Domask to play the three. Shannon will play the vast majority of the minutes at the two with Buck and Harmon as backups. Can’t imagine a better fit for this team than Ty at the point if he can adapt.

And my favorite Augustine trait: He got EVERY SINGLE JUMP BALL…it was amazing…and has been my pet peeve ever since that we’ve been comparatively horrible at it!

But not at Illinois and I would argue the league he plays in is worse that College D1.
No argument there, just interesting and pretty cool that he ended up improving his game that much. He went from a two star player, to playing high major ball at Illinois, and has been able to play professionally until his late 20s. He should be proud.
