Going back to the “which former Illini would you want for this year’s team”, I’d say either Brian Cook or Coleman Hawkins. Probably Cook for me, as he’s a stretch 4 in this team who would open the floor with his shooting and also be a massive high-low guy with Ivisic. Cook was really good in Self’s high low offense, and he’d be almost unstoppable teaming with Ivisic.

who was the greatest Illini in-bounder of all time-time? I think I want that guy.

I would go in a completely different direction. At least, to my eyes, this team seems to have gelled and is pretty cohesive. It also consists of some very good players already and others who want to break into the starting lineup. I think bringing in someone like those already mentioned would be more of a disruption to this team's dynamics, so I would pick someone like Jack Ingram. He knows his role on the team which would be to spell either Tomi or MJ. While MJ is doing better, not fouling as much (although, that might be due to better referees) but he is still a freshman and there is a good chance that fouls could limit his playing time. Ingram would be the perfect guy to sub in for him. And, Ingram might have been a good enough backup while Tomi was out these last couple of weeks and the Illini might have been able to win those games. He was, after all, a pretty good off-the-bench player in ‘05. He probably would have started for many other teams.
Or someone like Lucas Johnson, who wasn’t a prolific scorer but did everything else.

That's actually a good point and why I went with someone like Cook. While Cook was a really, really good player, I always felt like he played within himself (sometimes almost to a fault - I can't think of how many times I'd say to no one in particular "You're one of the best players on the floor - take the game over!!) and didn't try to dominate things like some great players can. I love TSJ and can see the point of why people would want him on this team. Yes, having someone like him who can create something out of nothing is something this team misses, so I can't really dispute that point at all.

But I'll still say replace Ben Humrichous with Brian Cook in this Illini lineup, and you have something scary. Cook would be an absolute matchup nightmare for teams with KJ and Ivisic in this lineup. The only significant question mark I'd see would be that Cook wouldn't up the athleticism in this lineup, while we all know that's unquestionably not a concern with TSJ. :)

100%
I feel like this team needs a guy who's both a leader and competitor. TSJ really dialed it up to win games in the BTT and E8 run to win games. We have a lot of talent, but with this tough stretch of games, illness, injury and/or some individual inconsistencies, I feel like we really need a singular guy who rallies the whole team with his energy to close out games, or lead us on runs. What's weird is how they did we saw it earlier in the season. Makes me wonder what the secret sauce is to see more of that.

Us keyboard warriors are often wrong about a lot of thing and the coaching staff is often vidicated. Where the keyboard warriors are right is with starting lineups and mins. Historically speaking, the staff has been stubborn about who they play and how often they play them. For the record many of us have been clammoring for more Morez, Riley and DGL and less Ben and Tre since the beginning of the season. Personally, seeing the starting lineup on the first opening game of the season was a head scratcher to me. It seems the staff has finally see the light. Hope they don't regress. Having our two highest rated recruits in decades coming off the bench never sat right with me.

Ben is a come off the bench guy that should play around 15 mins - same goes for Tre.

One name I haven't heard mention would be Alfonso Plummer. (or DJ Richardson one of my favorite 3pt shooters)

Yes ofc you can go with TSJ and be happy, but I think with this roster adding a consistent 3pt shooter is what they need. The best 3pt shooter on this team is 34%. Plummer shot 40.8% from 3 on 240 attempts. That is a perfect recipe a Brad Underwood team.

-DJ Richardson would be my next option since he shot 35-39% in his career and would've loved to see how Brad could've used him.

My first thought was Luther for some of the reasons you outlined. 41% three point shooter his senior year on 283 attempts. Plus he could slash a little bit, score in transition, and defend.

Option 1B for me would be Dee. 43% on 240 attempts his jr year. We know he's comfortable playing off the ball with another floor general. Lock down defender. One man fastbreak. Effective pnr game.

Someone like Ayo, TSJ, or even Rayvonte Rice would be nice because they could go get you one when you need it. But they are also kind of ball dominant (TSJ less so than the other two).

I do distinctly remember Plummer getting schooled on defense at some key points, though ... we don't exactly need more of that. :ROFLMAO: DJ Richardson would be great, but it's always difficult for me to accurately judge players from that late Bruce Weber/early John Groce time ... the teams were just so epically disappointing compared to all of the other memorable ones in our history.

I'm on the younger than probably most on this board so I was alive during the 05 team but was too young to remember any of the games. My first real (atleast good) memories was the Tyler Griffey back door winner against Indiana and Brandon Paul and DJ Richardson led team.

Luther (and Dee) as you outlined is a PERFECT choice.

I'm surprised there aren't more responses that would bolster frontcourt depth

Pretty solid first memory! Your formative Illini watching years were not great. Glad you stayed with it.

I think Shannon is just such an easy plug and play guy because he doesn't really require the ball in the half court and could make a killing in transition plus I felt like he was very good as a spot up shooter last year. Additionally this team is kind of weak on the wing imo and Shannon was a plus on ball defender.

How could you possibly matchup with a lineup lineup of KJ, Shannon, Riley, Morez, and Ivisic? Or your choice of others.

When in doubt. Give me the guy that would be the nPOY favorite.

Marcus Domask is the correct answer.

Sneaky answer, Alfonso Plummer. Dude was electric shooting the 3 when he was here. That's exactly what this team needs. He'd plug straight into the 2 and be the "go-to" sharpshooter.

TSJ and Ayo are the clear "best" players and certified bucket getters, but the problem you run into is that you would have 3 or 4 guys on this team who all do the same thing on offense.
